A guy I know bought a used ODO for a Lexus GS400
He seems to think that his original w/ 40,000 miles will pop right back in after he's driven about 20,000 miles on the used one (which he bought from a junkyard from another state .. has over 100,000 miles on it) and start up w/ 40,001 miles.
Someone PLEASE tell me that the mileage is captured in the ECU and that any lexus dealership can EASILY determine that he's committing fraud (i'm not a super big fan of this guy, and I hate poeple that try to commit any type of fraud).
What are his chances of getting busted?

Well, the GS has the mileage gauge with the Optitron gauges. He cannot just unplug the milage part, it's all connected. The gauges for one would not come one, and he could not see fuel level or how fast he is going (the screen blacks out). I also think that ECU is connected to other items that may make the car undriveable. I'll check.
He's acting like it's an Oldsmobile or something.

I do know that when my friend had his car checked out the mechanic told him that he was losing about 30hp or so because he unplugged his cluster due to the ecu not reading the right data.

I don’t know what state you guys are in, but in Pennsylvania they track your mileage every time the car goes in for its annual inspection and this info is forwarded to Harrisburg and recorded on the title.
It’s also tracked on your annual registration form when you pay that fee every year.
When the car is sold, all of this info has to match or BIG FINES are assessed to the previous owner.
I believe the figure is 25,000 dollars or more.
If a Dealer is caught doing this his sales license is revoked.
Whenever you buy or sell a car you must sign a “mileage certification” paper and this goes on record.
You must also disclose any frame or flood damage.
If trouble comes up after the sale they go back to the last owner and ASS RAPE HIM.
Not really, but you get the idea.

My Porsche tech told me that most luxury car (MB, BMW, Porsche and etc.) made after 99 has ECU monitoring the transmission usage. If your car has 20k miles on odometer and your transmission usuage is like 100k miles car then you're in trouble. Dealer can void your warranty and you might get charge for fraud.

That's what my Rolls dealer told me. Oh yeah, this asshole is why I try to stay away from used car if I can, I will take a new car that is in a lower class, just because I am sure that it has the correct mileage. That said, fraud detection is pretty good these days. Just make sure there is no sawdust in the block
