Got side swiped today while on the highway by some dummy in a lancer Evo. Will be getting estimates on Monday. Any guesses as to the cost? 2019 Hyundai Elantra, hard to see in the picture but there's a decent size dent there with scuffing. That wheel also suffered a lot of scuffing, looks like bad curb rash.
The guy admitted total fault and said he will pay for the repair instead of going through insurance. His car just had a few scratches... We will see what happens.

body estimates are never what you think they are!
gonna be on the high side.
I would report it to your insurance, because....if damage comes out to be super high...what are the chances the dude has $5-6k cash on hand?
not likely.
probably would stop answering your calls and tell you to shove it.

Thanks for replies, I was thinking 2k or less but now I'm worried it will be more and this guy won't be able to pay. I made a police accident report today just on case I do have to go through insurance. Going to get estimates tomorrow and this guy can either pay up quick or I'll just call insurance.
I did get estimates yesterday, keep in mind im in canada so these totals might need to be adjusted to USD to see who guessed the closest.
The estimates were for 5,700... 5,200 and 4,400. All are for full quarter panel replacement, new wheel etc. They are all what I would consider to be the best shops in the city, not shady places and I would have no problem taking my car to any of them.
I understand it could be done cheaper but who knows what the results would be and on a 2019 car it seems best to do it properly. Obviously this guy cannot pay that much so I will be going through insurance. Thankfully in ontario if the other party is found 100% at fault there should be no cost to me (no deductible). I have text messages from him that make it pretty clear whos fault it is. So its an easy decision to go through insurance.
Thanks to you all for the replies they defiantly opened my eyes to the severity of the damage and potential cost.
If we're playing Price is Right rules (as we all should), @KaMLuNg is the closest without going over... @TylerT is the close though but overshot by a few bucks (assuming 5K CAD average)
so, how confident are you that the perpetrator has that amount of cash on hand?

Whole new quarter? the existing quarter can be repaired and fixed for way less than a new panel. Plus you won't have to worry about water leaks from where they have to weld a new section on. New wheel is reasonable...

It's a unibody car Quarter panels are structural, and repairing them is no joke. A good body shop will cut a piece from the B-pillar back, and replace that entire section at least.
Cutting out and welding a small piece, massaging the steel, or filling it is just not an option.
the only reason i guessed that was because a few years back i had a baseball size dent on the front side of the fender arch... it was stud welded, pulled and painted for $1,500... that looked like double the work...
Looks like its just bragging rights. Or I guess I could send you the old wheel as a trophy.
Insurance claim was made, went with the shop that quoted 5,200 as they are a 'preferred' shop of my insurance company and they said they warranty the work for the life of the car. May take up to a week for them to get the car in and start fixing it.
Almost forgot to follow up. The car is fixed and looks like new. The paint blend is so good I can't see it. I also put my winter wheels and tires in the trunk and got them to put those on before returning it.
I ended up putting almost 2500 km on the rental car in the week I had it because I took it on a little trip to Montreal. Got totally stuck in the snow in downtown Montreal. But that's another story all together.
Insurance has not gone up (yet) and I ended up paying nothing out of pocket.

would your insurance really go up if the other driver was at fault? I've been a victim of body damage multiple times (people backing into my car in a parking lot) and my insurance never went up once.

I hope not! I was just commenting on how it just goes up every year for no reason.
My insurance renewed in october (before this happened) and went up for no reason, even though im working from home and barely driving.
They did offer the covid discount for a number of months of a untold amount.... well it ended up being like $30 total... sad

No, it would not. Not-at-fault accidents are recorded but do not go against you when evaluating rates.
