The car is actually may dad's (he's still young at heart). After washing and detailing it yesterday, I thought I'd go take it out and get some pics.
The quality of the interior materials and the fit and finish is top notch. The car is leased for 3 years, so hopefully he will not have to deal with any of the electrical problems.
It handles amazingly well, though at times the car's slightly heavy weight does show. Turbo lag is virtually nonexistent, and it seems like there is always power when you get on it hard, whether you're at 1500 or 4500 RPM. What's especially nice is how VW tuned the engine and exhaust note. It sounds so nice all through the wide power band. My dad chose the DSG over the traditional manual simply because it shifts quicker, which obviously makes the car faster than the manual version. And it's pretty fun to be able to have your chioce of shifting using the paddle shifters, or the shift lever.
On a different note, there really is a lot of room in the back seqt for a hatchback. It's a little difficult getting in and out, but once you get back there, you'd be pretty surprised how much room you have.
It's really a nice car that won't beat you up if you choose to use it as your daily driver, but if you do get in the mood, you can easily enjoy some really fun spirited driving.
I think I can speak for my dad and I both when I say that I'd recommend it.

I agree. I convinced my dad to go with the 18's because (IMO) they really set the car off. They are part of what make the GTI, the GTI. The 18's really compliment the grey color of the car with the horseshoe part of the wheel also being painted grey. Plus, the 17's looked too small and ordinary.

You know, he has never been stopped in this car. It amazes me because he does drive this thing pretty fast, but I guess it's his experience and long time on this earth that allows him to know when and where to look for the cops.
Sorry for rambling on there, but to answer your question, no he has never been stopped. Neither has my mom, who has had the front plate off her TL since she got it.

As for the wheels, sorry, they're staying on there.

That's my next car if things go to plan. Black Magic Pk. 0 DSG. I think Clarkson put it perfectly: "considering everything, this car is a sensation". Sure the Mazdaspeed 3 or SRT-4 are very fast, but this thing looks good, is quite practical, and is a good solid build. Civilized, yet fun.

Good luck with getting a new GTI.

I guess there's always solid black leather.

Google also gave me this as the 2nd result: http://www.men-in-kilts.com/rugs.html
I'll risk the S&M connotations and take the black leather, thanks.

I'm not getting leather. Most importantly because I like the look of the seats, but also because the package costs more than $2,000! For that price I would buy racing seats later down the line.
The GTI leather seat design looks much better though.
