Grand Cherokee Top speed question
Grand Cherokee Top speed question
I've a random question for you guys. My friend has a 1995 Grand Cherokee 5.2L. He said that he was doing 220 km/h (135mph). Now I'm kind of doubting that since the car is quite heavy, has only 220hp and is as aerodynamic as a trash dumpster. So do you guys think that it might be possible that he went that fast, or are the speed indicators unreliable in American (and other) cars when nearing these speeds?
I am doubtful since I managed only ~210 km/h (130mph) in my 200hp, lighter, and more aerodynamic TL - but it in a different location though.
Any thoughts or input?

my old 2000 sienna LE with 230hp, clocked in at 3800 lbs and i roped it up to 135mph. my e39 with 187 hp and 170 tq made it to 155mph with no problems. Hell, my 170hp CL 4 banger made it to 140+...
With enough road, any car can make it to 135... its 100% achievable, and that 5.2L is probably a tq monster, it shouldnt have any issue doing 135. actually the only issue he may have is a speed limiter.

Some owners posted that they got to 75 mph before it got scary.

Apparently the '95 Grand Cherokee isn't very heavy- maybe 3700 lbs. in with the I6 engine.

When I lived in Germany, I had my 1995 Chrysler LHS (3.5L, 215 HP) up to 112 before the limiter cut off fuel to the fuel pump. That is a scary sound when driving that fast.
My Volvo V70 (I5, 170 HP) was good to 125 mph, and I could have pushed it more, but drag and my brakes said not a good idea.
Just b/c two cars have similar torque numbers does not mean they will perform the exact same. Variables such as gearing and torque curve (as well as others) will affect performance. So while your TL may not get there with 210 ft/lb of torque it does not mean the case would be the same for other vehicles.
