got a parking ticket from 5 years ago.
is that legal? It wasn't even from a city or township. It's a university ticket from Rutgers-Newark. The funniest thing is that I graduated on a different campus than Rutgers-Newark, got my diploma already, the car isn't even titled to me anymore, I gave it to my brother. The only way they tracked me down was through DMV records.
It's not a pricey ticket, but I'd rather not pay something I don't have to. They can't produce proof the car was where they say it was. The car is no longer titled to me. It most probably is a ticket my brother racked and forgot to pay. Seriously 5 years later? I'm tempted to see if they'll send me another notice with a late fee on it What's 5 years worth of late fees look like?

One on the right for me
Thats odd because the ticket, I guess depending on state law, should have come up with the DMV registration renewal. Good luck figuring that out.

Was this a courtesy notice or something, or was it an original letter saying you received a ticket on x date?
For what though? I guess it depends on whether he was given prior notice.

For one thing, how are you supposed to contest that? It was five years ago. No chance of witnesses or evidence.
They could just mail people "tickets" several years later that are completely false and hope to make some money off of them.
Once again, screw 'em

Shred it and pretend like you never got it.
Ticket? What ticket?
Ticket? What ticket?

That ticket can kiss your ass. $35 will fill up your tank and leave you money left over to get food. Obviously someone on their end is not doing their job if you get the ticket 4-5 years later. lol seriously.

CL in lawnmower status
no point in fighting it, it'll end up costing you more probably
maybe not a point in paying, university's/college's in my city only get us to pay cuz they can hold back our deploma till we do.
it all depends on what this univeristy could do. which in your case, doesn't sound like they can do a lot
I'd probably pay it anyways, just cuz i like to have a clean record and not have something bite me in the ass later on.

already received ur degree... they dont have anything on to hold against u.
i'd check with the dmv to see if ur license or registration to your current vehicle could be suspended & if they say no then

SInce you haven't had any trouble renewing your license presumably the consequences of not paying the ticket are probably entirely contained within the campus but I believe they have the right to pass it along to the city, then things would get more serious. At that point it would be more likely to effect your ability to do automotive business and there is no statute of limitations.
Personaly I wouldn't pay it if it were me on principle. You received the notice long after your oppurtunity to apeal had expired. That's simply not fair.

I don't understand why people keep asking if something is "legal" ...
In MD if you don't pay parking tickets at the local public universities, the DMV will prevent you from renewing your registration until you pay the outstanding tickets.

Now, here's some shit, I actually had an unpaid ticket like 5 yrs ago and after 3yrs decided I better pay this ticket, since my reg was up for renewal and they sent my check back, with no explanation...very odd, this town usually tries to get me bad in parking tickets. Think I paid a total of $140 in parking tickets during college.

I'd call them and tell them you received a ticket in the mail from 4 years ago, however, play completely dumb and tell them that A) you never attended that campus, B) you had already graduated university by the date in question, and C) you have not owned that car for some time now. Also ask them for supporting documentation to verify the ticket is legit and they are not just sending you a random ticket from 4 years ago.
I wouldn't completely ignore it b/c it may come back to bite you, but I would do whatever I could to not pay it
Oh and BTW, I believe statute of limitations for tickets is 7 years, so technically it's still legit, but it will be hard for them to enforce.

I don't think reasoning like that will get you far unless the person on the other end of the line is authorized to rip up tickets and does so frequently, which is pretty unlikely.
They will most likely say they don't care when you graduated, they will say a car of your make with your license plate attached was parked illegaly on the given date and they might go on to say that it would be unfair to all the people who park legally if they were to make arbtirary exceptions.

I've decided to leave it alone and see if the inviersity really is money hungry . The worst they can do is assign it to the city which at that time I'll pay it. I don't mess with Newark. I really can't imagine if they would tack on a late fee either lol
