Got my New Ride – Winter beater…. Sort of

It’s a Subaru Outback Sport Special Edition 5-Speed

I originally started looking for a USED Outback Sport.
Nothing older then a 2002 because they did a major redesign in 2002.

But most 2002’s and 2003’s I found had 50,000 miles or more and were going for 11-12 thousand.

So I started looking for a 2004 or 2005 slightly used one.
I found a few with 20-30K miles, but they were selling for 13-14K and had no warranty or they were close to the end.

So I decided to check out the new 2006’s.
At first I wasn’t crazy about the new front end, but it began to grow on me.
Retail for the Outback Sport SE is nearly 21K and I didn’t want to spend that much for a bad weather car.
A dealer near me, Becker Subaru is in the midst of putting up a huge new showroom and they were advertising a “construction sale” so I figured I’d check it out.
Unbelievable discounts !!!!
Retail on mine was nearly 21K and I got the car for 17,600 bucks.
I think that’s pretty good considering it’s brand new and the 2006’s are just coming out.

Here she is…..

My parents had one of those, that thing was a beast in the snow. I drove circles around the SUV's.

That’s what they tell me.
I might actually be looking forward to snow this winter.

That radio has a big screen. Almost looks like it has navi.

What kinda stuff does it come with? I assume you bought it stripped down since its your "beater."

It’s actually pretty loaded up for a small car.
The Impreza is the base model.
The Outback Sport has all the goodies.
Raised suspension, 16” rims, fogs, lower body cladding, power windows, mirrors, locks & such.
A/C, cruise, leather wheel, leather shifter.
The “Special Edition” adds rear wing, 6-CD changer, 260 Watt stereo w/ sub, auto dimming mirror and some other stuff.

Thanks…. It’s Evergreen Metallic.
Should look even better once I get some ZAINO on it.
Unfortunately it only came with the Beige interior.
I would have preferred gray.
I hope I don’t regret that decision in a few years.

dude, i was wondering where your car was.

my new home (cubicle) is on the 2nd floor north wall facing the north parking lot where i usually can see your car. haven't seen it the last couple days and was wondering if you were on a trip or something.

i guess i know why now.

Subie's are known to being reliable...If I didn't get my box (xB), I was looking into the WRX wagon, if not an outback sport like what you got there...I'm also a bit partial about their new "trademark" front end, a-la- B9 Tribeca, but it's also growing on me...Very nice!

the color combo is nice and the front end did grow on me. i really like it now, it probably looks even better in person. nice choice of a winter car! the interior looks like something you would see in a sports coupe.

That front end will take some getting used to.

I think any car with snow tires will do better in the snow than AWD on all-season tires.

I had a Dodge NEON rental last week.
I didn’t want to put any extra miles on the CL or risk getting into an accident/deer hit and blow the deal.

I looked at the WRX, but decided to go with the OBS.
I could have gotten base WRX for about 21K.
But then you’re talking low profile 17” tires, stiff suspension, turbo motor, boy racer effects.
Sure those are nice, but not real appropriate for what I’m doing here.
Plus it would have eaten into the profit I made on the CL sale.
Paid cash for this and have about 4K left to put towards next years toy.

YEA….Used ONE DAY !!!
And they already have marks on them.

I’m getting the rubber “All Weather” mats for the winter.
Then I might go with black factory ones next summer or leave the rubber ones in there.

I know what you mean.
I asked about that and the sales guy said I don’t need snows.
It’s a pretty aggressive tread on there.
It will probably be good for the first two years or so then I might look into getting an extra set of “take-off” wheels and some dedicated snows.
My dad has a Toyota Highlander and my wife has a RAV4.
Both are on all season tires and they go great in the snow.

For you guys who don't like what the "new" 2006 front end looks like, here is the 2005.
I think the new nose makes this one look kind of dated.

Looks great Shawn and you can't beat that price

Guy I work with has a 2001 Outback and he bought it new because he saw the same thing with the used outbacks. For not much more money he got a new one. He wanted awd cause he's got a long hilly driveway that's a bitch to drive up before he cleans the snow off (sound familiar ). With the deal you got, it's a no brainer.

That subie will compliment a summer only sports car VERY nicely....
