Good deal?

Ok, so i've been going back and fourth about buying a truck. I was going to buy a set of rims for the TL, but decided that i needed a truck. So that said i've been looking at several trucks in the area all under 8k. Well a guy i work with whom i'm great freinds with ( Also a ASE Master Tech), has a 92 Toyota 4cly, 4x4, 5 speed with 214,xxx. I've seen this guy drive this thing to work for the past 3 years on days he does'nt ride his harley, and hes the original owner. He said he would sell it to me for 2k. Its got a little rust on the rear bumper, but guys i'm talking about a truck i might put 2-3k a year on, just for lowes runs, trash, hauling away yard waste, etc....what do you think. Don't have any pics, but this guy has kept this thing in great shape since hes owned it. I used it when i moved, and it drives and runs great, new clutch, breaks, tires, muffler only thing it needs is a passenger seat belt is busted.

I think you can do a lot better for 2k. That is too much money for a 92 yota pickup with 214k miles.

I'm gonna disagree with the above, that sounds like a good deal to me. Look at it this way; can you find another one-owner 1992 Toyota 4X4 with less miles in that same condition owned by an ASE tech for $2,000? Probably not.

Or, can you find another one-owner 1992 Toyota 4X4 with 214K miles in that same condition owned by an ASE tech for less than the asking price of $2,000? I'm gonna say negative.

Would you rather buy one off a random used car lot with no idea of its history or mechanical condition?

I'd grab it. You know its history, you know its condition, the price is reasonable, and those things are absolutely f-ing indestructible. Not only that, but if something pops up and you have a question about it, you just call up dude and he'll be happy to answer it for ya.

Post pics after you buy.

Considering you trust this guy, I'd agree with Mirror and choose the Toyota.

New clutch and new brakes! 4Runners have a ton of potential and aftermarket support if you wanna go crawling too. But it sounds like you're not going to use it much, and for just $2k, that is a lot of truck.

I bet he would help you if the thing had an issue, and would feel bad if it did. I'd pick it up, and as you say, it's a part time vehicle at best.

Your right i'm not going to use it much, and thats why i don't want to spend much more than that on a work truck. I'm very good freinds with this guy. Hes a firefighter on my shift whom i hang out with often, in his wedding, etc. He was a ASE master tech before he decided to be come a carrer firefighter. He has done all the work him self and i trust his work. The truck runs great, 4 wheel drive works great and the thing i love is that he bought it new in 92 and has onwed it ever since. He said he'd keep it around, but he just bought a 09 crew cab bc he just had twins with his wife, so he needed more room! Hes also got 3 harleys, he does all the work on those as well. I know if somthing happened he help me out, he helped me install my intake on the TL, he has like every tool known to man lol. He told me today that he has to fix the seat belt, and install a new belt and its ready to go if i want it.

Go for it!

It seems like a steal to me. Out of curiosity, I just checked cars.com locally for a '92 toyota pickup and the 2 found had more miles and were more $ than the one you're looking at. Plus, you can't beat the fact that you know it's history. It is extremely rare to know a used car's past.

AND I'm sure your friend would help you out with any repairs on the vehicle (as someone else mentioned).

This looks like win-win situation to me.

This. I don't know what fantasy world I'd have to live in to find a better truck for the same amount of dough.

That sounds like a great deal. I would do it in a hear beat. Smaller trucks are in high demand and are going for good money right now. People still want trucks, but many people can't afford to keep up with trucks that get 12 mpg anymore. When I was looking before I bought my truck recently, smaller suv's like explorers and blazers were going for almost as much as tahoes and expeditions.

Why? This truck seems to fit OP's needs perfectly.

If you need a truck this is not a deal to pass up considering you shouldn't have any expected maintenance aside from an oil change within the next two years.

well i think i'm going to jump on this. I talked to him today and he said he just needs to replace the belt and the seat belt and its ready to go. So it will be a week or 2 because of work related issues, but hopefully in a few weeks i'll have it!
