Garmin voice activated Nav question..

Anyone using the voice activated Garmin here? My question is, to use the voice activated feature, must you also have the voice feature one. 1st thing I turn off on my new Nav is the voice feature "turn in 500 feet".

I am researching the Garmin 855 or maybe the 1490T (does not have the voice command feature but has larger screen size of 5").

Our TomTom has voice activation capabilities and it sucks. I think we tried it a total of two times and were frustrated enough on those two different occasions to realize it's a feature we'll never use. The commands and voice needed to be so precise to what we pre-recorded that it ended up taking multiple attempts of us speaking before the unit matched what we wanted....Actually, it never understood the commands, so we gave up. It's simply faster and easier to hit one or two buttons to get what you want - especially after you've become familiar with the layout.

Are you interested because of new laws that prohibit you from entering info on GPS units/phones while driving?

LOL! Thanks for the feedback. My Blackberry does the same. I ask it to call So & So, and it gives me totally different names...

If I remember correctly (it's been a while), ours didn't even make it far enough to misinterpret our commands -- it just didn't match them at all and kept asking us to repeat.

Maybe we just suck or the Garmin is better, but if that feature is important to you -- definitely try it out in person and make sure it works well and is what you want before spending the extra money for that feature.

nope. I am going to wait till Jul when the Garmin Nuvi 1490T comes out. It's $499, has no voice command but has a 5" screen.

my last 2 cars have had the factory Nav, but I am tired of paying $2k for them. Time for an after market one and one that I can transfer. I am one that does use my Nav extensively, so it is worth it to get a high end one. Current Nav can only put in 5 points at one time. Some days, I need at least 8.

thanks again.
