Some of the people go with a 323i/325i because it uses BMW's alusil (aluminum + silicone alloy I think) engine block, which is lighter. The 335i uses an iron block to withstand F/I reliably. Plenty of power and it handles very well, but people who autox would definitely choose a 323i over a 335i. Of course there are those that buy it simply because its cheaper, but you can't generalize everyone.
There is no current 323 in America. There is one in Canada though. The 325/328/330 use a magnesium/aluminum block which isn't a whole ton lighter than some of BMWs other motors. The 335 uses and all aluminum block with cast iron cylinder liners which is not that heavy.

Sorry if I sound like an ass, but I think people who buy a bottom of the line BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc. get so full of themselves just because of a little badge. I would take a BMW any day of the week, so long as it was a 330i or above, and an e46. I think BMW's are great cars, nothing against them. The 335i is an amazing car, as is the new M3.
They shouldn't even have an ego to begin with.... its all relative. Have you even driven a 323i? An E46 330Ci felt much faster than an E46 323i to me but the driving enjoyment was almost the same. Given though, the 330Ci was an automatic and the 323i was manual, I still enjoyed driving both almost the same... I think I actually like the 323i more. Not everyone can afford a 335i or an M3, but there are people out there who are genuinely interested in the driving enjoyment. I would think its more of a case of elitist people buying a BMW, not BMWs turning people into elitists. I don't mean to sound like an ass either but you sound like you're already a BMW owner.

A 318ti or one of those C230 hatchbacks though... that's another story.

I guess I should probably go drive a 323i before I bash their drivers , though in my area they are generally women, who, not to put Caligirl down, seem to not care much for their cars. Is the C230 that awful little Mercedes with the Prius like back end? If so, that car is an abomination to the MB name.

test drove a c300 over the weekend, and two things:

1) The salesman at Fletcher Jones Mercedes in Newport was a TOTAL ASSHOLE...made it apparent that we were wasting his time

2) Someone above said it best...overall, the car felt subpar. The Navi system is awesome, but overall there isnt much to the car. The seats were 'ok', and the performance very poor...i had to floor it all the way to pass people on the freeway. The backseats are also cramped.

Not saying that its a bad car...just did not seem to be worth the $45k sticker price

I also test drove the g35 again, and wow, I was even more impressed than before...more power than I could control. The seats were great, and the overall feel (ride quality, driver input, navi integration) are awesome.

I havent driven the 328xi (havent had time), but I think the G35 is going to be the one

CTS gets pretty expensive when you actually load it up with options however.

G35X is the best bang for the buck. IF money is no option drive them all and figure out which you like best. No real difference otherwise between them all.

I've seen at least four different new C-class Benz over the weekend. On paper I didn't like the design, but now that I've seen it, I actually think it looks better than both the 3 and G in the exterior design. I have to drive one...

i agree i think the new Cclass looks better than the 3 and G in exterior design. but their lack of options and packages are ridiculous.
