Fuel Cell Vehicle

So some of you know that I deal with Maybach and Mercedes. We just got in a Mercedes Benz A Class Fuel Cell Car.

It's pretty wild, and kind of cool. It is almost completely quiet, and what sounds it does make sound like the gas grill and vacuum cleaner. If anyone wants pics let me know and I will take some of it.

It odd to have a car that is quiet, and just produces power when you hit the gas pedal.

No engine, electric motors.

Under the hood is just the master brake cylinder, A/C Compressor, and a radiator.

Does it run on hydrogen? If so, where do you "fill up"?

Yes, it runs on hydrogen, and we fill it up at a Shell Station that sells hydrogen.

That's cool, I didn't know there were places that sell hydrogen in the US.

DaimlerBenz (and then DaimlerChrysler) really has been the main driving force behind applying fuel cell technology to vehicles. During college, I worked on a 7-week exhibit design proposal at the Science Museum in London on fuel cells as alternative energy. That was back in '00, when I think they had just released their NECAR 5. We ended up using that car and a Jeep fuel cell concept as examples of current applications... not the actual cars, just pictures and descriptions. I remember one of my team's recommendations to the Science Museum was that if they ever built the actual exhibit, that they should look into getting an NECAR for display. I don't think they thought our recommendation was very realistic.

The car holds 1.83 kilograms of hydrogen. 1 kilogram is about equal to a gallon of gas. This car will run 100 miles on the 1.83 kilograms of fuel.

We are getting some normal fuel cell cars, and a fuel cell BUS. Should be pretty cool. And in one of the pics is the Maybach 57, which uses a ton of fuel. Actually the Maybach does pretty well considering. 12/20 city/highway
