Angry Front License Plate Ticket???

Ok, so it's been about 2 years since I've gotten one of these; and at that time, it was a $10 fix-it-ticket down in Los Angeles.

I now live in Santa Barbara, so I don't know if there's different rules or what not up here. So the other day, I go to my car which was parked in town, and there was a ticket on my window. It was for not having a front license plate, and the ticket was for $275!!!....WTF?

I bought this car about 3 months ago, however the guy I bought it from said that he lost the front plate, and I never bothered to get a new one at the DMV. From what I'm told, they can't issue me a new plate, and that I'd have to get a new plate # issued to me. Therefore, I would need to replace the rear as well.

So my question here is: What can I do? Is there any way around this? I can't be stuck w/ a $275 ticket for this - I can't afford that shit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

`John

$275 for not having a front license plate?!?!?

Good lord! I would find out if it's a fix it ticket at first. And then I would run down to the DMV and get a front plate put on in a hurry. My wallet cowered in fear as I was reading your post!

Damn, I thought a no-license plate ticket in San Francisco was expensive ($100).

I got a ticket for 24 miles over the limit for $200 that's still cheaper.

That's got to be a city ordinance or something in Santa Barbara.

That's gotta be local. My parents got a no-front-plate ticket at LAX that was only $25.

And did you actually talk to the DMV about getting a new plate or were you told you couldn't get the plate by someone else?

Correct it and go to court, the judge will/should adjust it for you.

My buddy got a window tint and no front plate ticket in Ontario a little while ago and it was $375

shit its 100 in SF? i always thought it was 25 but that was from a Road and Track clip about LA drivers not getting tagged by the red light camera because they didnt have a front plate so the cops just wrote a bunch of fix-it-tickets instead.

thanks clpower

EDIT: Quick question:

When you purchase a used car, do the plates transfer over? Or is the new owner supposed to get new plates?

So when I go to the DMV today to get a front plate, what do I tell them?

yes, plates transfer over. Tell them you don't have a front plate and need one

tell them about the ticket, then keep the documentation from the DMV about ordering a new one. Take all that with you on your court date

and if you have pictures of the car prior to buying it (if you found it online) that could help your case if it shows it without front plates.

`John

That was before they said that they would not raise the taxes.
So, no tax means they will get your $ somewhere else.

UPDATE

I just got back from the DMV. They told me I had to surrender my current plate to them, and I'd get 2 new plates for $22. So I went outsie and took off the plate and brought it in (it seemed kinda thick, but I didn't think much of it). I got called up and gave them my plate. The guy inspected it for a second, and started prying away at the plate. Next thing I know, there's 2 plates in his hands.

He then goes on and tells me to just get it put on, and bring it to the local Police station and have them write it off for $10. Ain't that some shit?

BTW, my ticket doesn't have a court date on it. All it had was a price for the ticket, and an envelope to mail in the cash.

funny thing is for the last 3 years i've been searching for my front plate and couldn't find it. (for fear in case i ever got this ticket). I never could find the plate and I looked everywhere in the house.

my registration came up and i got my new sticker. I took my plate off to clean off the old sticker and sure enough there was the other license plate stuck behind the other.

okay okay, I have to play idiot too. So I got my plates for the GTO today, I open it up and am like "wtf, there is only one plate". I couldn't believe it. Finally I was about to walk up to the office and call the dealership that sent it to me. I threw the plate on my desk and it some how morphed into two

one thing I hate about WA State is, they require front license plate. The three cars I've owned, I've never sported them, been stopped multiple times in all, but only ONE ticket, I was so pissed, it was $95. They always give warnings, well usually. It's also a stupid excuse to pull you over too. It's like don't waste my time.

This reminds me of the Monty Python Cat License, where the "Ministry of Housing" guy stratches off the word "dog" and pencils in "cat". So, is anyone passing through town is a potential victim, too? Perhaps everyone could just do one up on their computer, because it's just the number they want really. Isn't it?

I got ticket with 3 violations; front windows tint, no front plate, no registration and fine was over $400.

I got 2 of them signed off (front plate, and registration) and fine reduced to $10 for 2 violations and I don't know how much it'll be for front windows tint.
