30 cents per car?
$1?
$3?
$30?

More of a general question, for all of you whose factory head units didn't come with HD Radio.

People still listen to terrestrial radio?

That said, it is a useful function in my RLX so I can separate out all the substations of my local NPR affiliate.

Otherwise, I'm steaming music from my iPhone, or listening to satellite radio or Pandora in the car now.

Satellite is cool but HD is free! (Had carmakers decided not to skimp on including it).

Acura is not saving any because they are not the one who is paying, even it is supposed to be "FREE"

If they save $2 over their whole lineup and sell a million cars, that's $2 million dollars.

BMW didn't include an AUX until 2007 in a 100K plus 7-series... At the end of the day it is what it is.

or they could include it for free and raise the MSRP by $3 and they just made another $1 million in the process.

There may have been a conflict of interest since Honda was a investor in XM when the stock price fell. GM and Honda both pumped money into XM IMO since they already put the technology in their vehicles. I bought some at $0.10/share but sold it on a trailing stop order which I'm still made at since today XM trades at ~$3.

None the less, I agree HD is very cool. I like the audio quality and there are alot of really good station in the Baltimore/DC area for alternative music and other stuff.

Never ceases to amaze me, the exclusion of some connectivity in some car models. My wife's 2003 Pilot had Aux inputs but not my 2005 TL.

I know a few engineers long ago who worked on the DSP/FW for HD radio, originally it was a off-shoot of a Westinghouse/CBS technology group in Columbia Maryland which became USA Radio. The FCC basically told them they would approve a digital radio standard if they merged with Lucent Digital Radio.

HD Radio is great, far better content in my area than XM. Wish it had a greater adoption/following.

As for the cost, $34.49

The tech is probably licensed to the whole acura/honda company rather than individual cars but royalties are per car.

Now that is cheap!

Maybe they justified it by thinking those who pay 100k for a car have an in-car live entertainer and don't need AUX. Or did they add Bluetooth by then?

If not, then that is just a Richard move! Reminds me of when Toyota used to exclude clocks and offer them as a $400 option.

I don't care how crystal clear commercials are, I don't want to listen to them. And terrestrial radio is like 30-40% commercials. Garbage. XM/Pandora One/my own music via BT.

Talk about Garbage? XM/Pandora via cellular/BT MP3's?!?!?!? About 1/20th the quality of a CD even, much less only 1/4000th a DVD-A!!!!!! Why don't you just get your grandfathers AM radio?LOL You are gifted with one of the finest moving Studio Quality music systems ever made stock in a car, and yet you feed Garbage in! Give your ears a gift, get an Elliot Scheiner or Steve Wilson mixed DVD-A disc before your ears sue you for divorce!!!

My TSX is a base (no ELS), and my S2000 is noisy as hell (though with an Alpine deck and Polk db components). It all sounds like relative crap. More importantly though, it's all COMMERCIAL FREE. I hate commercials. And I hate swapping CDs (never played on in either my TSX or S2000).

BTW...USN? I grew up in Gales Ferry, CT. Small world.
