Fit (06-08) vs. NA miata (90-97)
So, I'm lookin to getting a DD/occasional track car, and I've pretty much come down to these two cars.
The thing that makes me want a fit is that it's very gas friendly, has a lot of storage space, and is fairly new...not to mention i heard it's pretty peppy on the track. It'd also be pretty practical in terms of daily usage (like going on roadtrips, etc.). The bad thing about the fit though is that it's more expensive than the miata, probably around 12k used, and it's fwd.
I was looking at miatas because they're fairly cheap (around $3k for a decent one), and they're freaking awesome at the track since it's such a quick rwd. I could use the money saved to invest in more mods/suspension/wheels/maintenance. Plus the gas mileage isn't too bad. The bad thing about the miata, though, is that it's a 2-seater (meaning less practicality), and it'd probably be like a '94ish which would mean maintenance would suck, and i'd run into problems more often since the mileage would be super high (in the 100k area). But then again, the money that was saved could be used towards the maintenence cost....
I guess it is obvious that the Fit would be more practical for dd, but the miata is so freakin cheap, and I think it'd be a more fun car to drive. What do you guys think? I'm open to any other suggestions btw.

Talk about apples and oranges.... and you want take a Fit to the track??? I've seen weirder cars going around the cones but every time I saw a Fit, all I heard was laughter and jokes (including from the announcer, over the speakerphone) but some people get a kick out of that.
The Miata shifter, even stock kicks ass. With a short shifter its literally just a (hard) flick of your wrist. Its like the S2000 shifter, very short throws, narrow shiftgates (S2000 is a bit narrower though) and it has a great feel to it. They're cheap and a lot of fun to drive, I've been thinking about one for a toy also. Either way, neither car is great at straight line acceleration but for a track car, Miatas are very common and for good reason. Personally I like cars I can mod and work on.... and the Miata is just that. Every time I change something that affects the driving experience (not appearance mods), it makes me want to drive my car more and more.
I've honestly never driven a Fit, because a while back I was looking at them and they never had the 5-speed manual ones on any of the lots and I sure as hell wasn't going to waste time driving an auto one. I've sat in them though, and honestly I don't really like the "toilet" driving position, you sit pretty high up..... as if you're on the toilet. If you've been in an xB before, its similar. There's a deceiving amount of room in the car, but it feels like you're in a mini-minivan.
Miata.net is a good forum for more research. If it wasn't clear already, I'd take the Miata. I always say this though.... drive a few different cars. Even try a car you were thinking of but never seriously considered. That's how I ended up in what I'm driving and have been driving for over a year now.

oh and what about a Mazda3 hatch? Killer's wife has one last I heard..... my boss has a 3s sedan with leather interior for a daily and its really nice for a car of that price. You could also consider a Versa, which synth just got...... but I don't really like the way they look.

Think about this, if a fit costs $12K and a Miata costs $3K, you don't have to worry that much about the miata repair costs...Just buy 4 of them and if it breaks down, sell it, by the time you get to the fourth one, you will have made enough from the other three to buy a fifth one.
Seriously though, if you want to spend $12k anyway, why not just buy a newer Miata? And I think you are comparing apples and oranges here, either you need a practical car, or a sporty one, you couldn't find two cars further apart than a fit and a miata.

What about an 04-05 Civic Si? It's got the looks of a Fit (2 less doors though), great utility and they're super cheap even for low mileage ones due to some people not liking the styling. Throw some mods on that and it's a great DD and should kick a Fit's butt on the track. I had an '04 with a Jackson Racing Supercharger and it was a nice little sleeper. The shifter kicks a55, too. Just an option.

Miata- great driving car, actually probably much cheaper than a Fit, mods and parts available up the wazoo (and does anyone even make a roll hoop or cage for the Fit yet??), etc.
Miatas have their own class in SCCA, and likely other sanctioning bodies.
I think most of the Miata racers are confident in their sexuality, though-- how about you- did you already get a Fit?

Cheap until it needs a clutch....or control arms.....or the timing belts/balance shaft belts/water pump replaced......or motor mounts.....or oil seals.....or the rear hatch glass sealed......
Oh, and to the OP -
Between the two:
if you need a DD/Occasional track car, get the Fit.
if you need a Track car/Occasional DD, get the Miata.
All set then.

I think of a track car and a daily driver as two separate cars. What do you have now? If you have a new reliable car (which I am assuming you do), I don't see the need for a fit.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll look into everything suggested. Ep3 doesnt sound too bad either, but insurance would probably suck compared to that of a fit. I know for sure that since the miata is inexpensive, i could just pay for liability.
Well, I may give my tl to my parents/brother so they take over the payments.
So pretty much if i did get a new car, it'd be my dd.

Another car came to mind. The Mazdaspeed Proteges were really good handling cars and their turbo motors were great performers for what they were. Very mod-wothy cars. I nearly bought one of those before I decided on the EP3.

Why's that? It was super low for me and I didn't have a good driving record at all.

As a track car... Miata >>>>> Fit, even if the fit has a K24 imo.

I know a guy who has one, and he loves it but his wife has a sedan so if they ever need to take more people or do grocery shopping or watever they have something else to use.

Got a Miata this past summer and I have to say, it is a hoot to drive. Super light and fun to throw into the corners. Sorry, but way to compare it to a Fit.
Check out miata.net but Miatas are super reliable and easy to work on. Low mileage examples are not hard to find. I picked up a '94 w/51K on it. I'd also stick with the NA and not get into the NBs. NBs are heavier and less "pure" than the NAs.
As for the whole "gay" Miata thing...if you worry that your car defines you, well then you've got issues. I've had buddies crack on it, but after driving it, they "get it".
Man up and get the Miata!

If you're so insecure about your sexuality that you can't be seen in a "gay" car, for fear that you'll expose your suspectness to everyone, then you've got bigger things to worry about. If you take it personally when someone disses your car you probably define yourself through the car more than through your own self.
Plus you'll have an open air car.... great as long as you're not Irish or something. I met this guy who had an Elise, but it was a hardtop because he couldn't get a tan.... he could only get sunburn.
