.....faster cars maybe but, NYPD is NOT know for their pursuit capabilities. NYPD is NOT the LAPD, CHP or even NJSP.
My friend just picked up a red Charger SRT-8 a few weeks ago and he's a lunatic. Knowing him, he'll probably try to play cat-and-mouse with a cop in an R/T and run away from him. Only a matter of time...

The red's & clear. Hard to tell in the pics.
that looks pretty slick, but I do agree they need the updated light bars. then again I hate it when the CHP cruisers here have them because it makes them harder to spot.

NJSP Crown Vics have extremely flat light bars that look like nothing until they light up and become a mobile representation of Times Square.

$25k is for the recruits (6 months) but it bumps up to $33k upon graduation and within 5 years the salary is $60k.
January 2006 or after:
Police Academy (first six months): $25,100 (Annualized)
Upon completion of six months: $32,700
Upon completion of 1 ½ years: $34,000
Upon completion of 2 ½ years: $38,000
Upon completion of 3 ½ years: $41,500
Upon completion of 4 ½ years: $44,100
Upon completion of 5 ½ years: $59,588

But
, they are still underpaid. I imagine these Chargers would see duty within the Highway Patrol Division but
for certain. (Just be on the lookout while driving on the Belt, Van Wyk or Deegan.
)
Guys the car isnt done yet. And looking at the car number, it looks like it will be the "Show Car". it is just so that we can see what they will look like. 3100 is the stnadard number used for the museum or other non offiial duty.
The road ready vehicles will most definitly have pushbars, black steel wheels, more lights etc..
They chargers will be tested as highway units, and they will have alot more shit on it.

my personal opinion i don't like it.
a town about 5 miles to the north of where I live just had a new cop cruiser approved for purchase. they currently have a 97 or 98 crown vic. they had it narrowed down between:
new crown vic again
new charger(this is what the chief wanted)
new Impala- that's what the board of directors picked to get.
all the town police depts around here are going to Impalas.
A lot of police depts are pissed at Ford since that deal with the gas tank may explode due to rear impact crash. Ford refuse to recall the cop cruisers. A Ohio State highway patrol was hit on I-75 i think he had a dude pulled over. got hit in the rear end at 65-70 mph. of course sent the cruiser into the back end of the car pulled over then it exploded. the patrolman just bearly lived. they had to MedFlight him to the hospital and all this crap. I was talking with a State Highway patrolman why they won't go with a Chevy Impala they said up until 2006 they didn't offer a V-8. and on interstate which is a BIG money maker for them it's hard to catch speeders that have like Z-28s and Mustang GTs and Vettes. so I think if Chevy makes a "stripped" Impala SS it would sell to the Ohio State Patrol.
