Finally ran a WRX STI (Video)

Well, I have been one of the guys on this board supporting the TL in the good old debate of TL vs STI or EVO. I always thought a 6 speed would hang pretty close at anything other than a launch. I finally was able to set a race up with a friend of a friend, and we made a couple of runs from about 20mph, and I had my wife shoot a video. As I expected, the STI did win, but I was happy at how close I was able to hang.

We hit it on the third honk and the TL surprisingly stayed pretty damned even until the shift into 2nd, at which point, the STI began to pull. It walked off, and the damned thing hit 3rd while I was still halfway in 2nd (the gearing must be damned low!). We ran well into 3rd gear (he actually hit 4th), probably to about 80 or 85. All in all, he probably pulled two car lengths or so from 20 to 85. I was hoping the TL would keep him closer to a car length, but the result still isn't too bad considering what the STI is. One disclaimer, I do have an Injen CAI, so that might have helped me a little bit over a stock TL, and the STI doesn't have much room to go in 1st from 20, so he was shifting just about as soon as we started, so that undoubtedly helped me hang in there in 1st. I was glad to see that the STI isn't capable of utterly destroying a TL like some on these boards suggest. It definitely won, but it wasn't 6 or 7 cars or anything. We were going to race from the line once, just for grins, and he wound up redlighting. He totally jumped right through a red light before it turned. Damn, that thing just jumped off the line!

I have a video clip if someone can explain to me how to post it (if anyone cares to see it). My wife shot it, so it's not the most stable thing in the world, but it gives you an idea. She didn't get the damned thing started until I was hitting second (you can hear my tires spin as I hit). The engine noise you hear is the rumble of the TL with a CAI. Anyway, even though the clip doesn't get the first gear part, you can see how hard he pulled from 2nd on.

Just upload the video to your host and link it. If you don't know how to link it, just type out the url. That would work for me

I currently have an Evo and drove an '04 TL and have been saying over and over I didnt think the TL was that much slower. Again the TL was a bit slower but not by a whole lot.

Why dont you email me the video and I will host it. How large is it ?
Send it to Mikeag60@optonline.net

That sounds right. The STi will hit about 58 in 2nd. Some reviews have said if the gearing was tweaked, slightly, it would be able to run VERY close to a 4 second 60.

Since you have to shift the STI so quickly, the driver on the STI is going to make a BIG difference. I have a buddy who has an STI with a few mods. He's outrunning M3's and ///AMG's up to about 80 with ease. After that he slowly looses ground. He said one more mod and he'll be in the 11's.

Not to sound like a jerk, but this is absurd. The STI is a sick machine. It does 0-60 in 1.2 seconds, and if tweaked ever so slightly would as mentioned above be a 4 second 0-60! The car will destroy the TL in every performance category without question, yes, even on a highway starting out doing 70 mph and racing to 120, its still much faster! Why are people trying to compare these vehicles? Not only does it put the TL to shame in straight line duos, it is comical to see the differences in twisties and any inclement weather. Time and time again the TL is compared to cars like the STI and M5's?? Why??

Not to sound like a jerk, but this is absurd, TOO. I know the STI is a sick macine, but did you say 1.2 seconds for 0-60?

I also dissagree with you, and not just because you said it runs to 60 in 1.2 seconds.

If you study test results - especially Car and Driver who run a wide variety of tests including a "street start" and mid speed incrments (such as 50 - 70 or whatever), you will see that much of the Evo and STI times are the result of the impressive launch they get with AWD, and where they can dump the clutch to avoid turbo lag. Look at the Street start and the quarter mile trap speeds, and you will see that they are still impressive, but not nearly to the extent that the 0 - ? times would indicate. They are only 3-4 MPH faster at the end of the quarter. Yes, that is significant in racing terms, but it's not "destroying" the TL (six speed).

Yes, thats what I said. Look at page 93 of this months(oct 04) Motor Trend. Clearly stated! Ive driven the STI extensively and the car will DESTROY the TL in every category.

0-60 in 1.2 seconds?

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA. You're pretty funny man. LOL

Motor Trend says 0-60mph in 4.87 seconds... please get your facts straight.

I hear you, I hear you! I'm getting in touch with Michael A to have him post the video. Keep in mind that my wife was slow on starting it, so she only got it started as I nailed 2nd. If you listen closely, you'll hear the chirp into 2nd. Michael will hopefully get this thing up and running so you can see it.

Oh, and the size is about 5 megabites.

Can anyone help me out with the video? It's in AVI format, and it's about 5.14MB. Is there some place I can post it? Michael, the video clip was shot with my Cannon digital camera. When I saved the video, there was a small THM file with it in the folder. Do you need that file as well?

Ok, Michael was able to see the video, but unable to use his hosting service. Shaqs200TL has told me he will post a link, and I have sent him the video. Sorry for all the talk with no video. It should be coming shortly...

My copy of the magazine says the Sti does 0-30 in 1.2 seconds, NOT 0-60!!

As I corrected in my reply above posted earlier, I accidentally put 0-60 instead of 0-30. Sorry, and I hope most knew what I meant.

Ok, guys, I have the video hosted. I'm not going to leave it up for too long, as it's on my company's website, and I don't want to tie it up, but you can view it there. The link is here Let me know if you can see it, once you have tried.

IMO, The way that video looked, you didnt stand a chance and yes! I dont think your car will be able to keep up with an STI....he will walk all over you(stock) unless your forced inducted..

I guess it just depends on your definition of "walk all over." To me, him pulling two car lengths from 20 to 80 isn't too bad. But, anyway, I wasn't doing this to argue the TL is faster or anything. I have just seen so much variation in opinion, and I thought an empirical test would be nice.

A rolling start is all fine and dandy but that STI would have absolutley killed you from a dead start. He would have had three car lengths on you by the time your front wheels stopped spinning

Which has been my point all along. I have just been tired of people saying how monstrous the STI is in comparison to the TL because of 1/4 mile times. I just wanted to show a comparison of actual power:weight, which can only be demonstrated by taking the AWD out of the picture. When I saw him tear off from the light when we were getting ready to race though,(he redlighted) I was in awe.

Sorry, but I took the video down after 24 hours. I had to put it on my company's website, and I don't want to get nailed. I did get an offer from someone to host it, and he was kind enough to do so and send me this link. Try this link
