Final stretch of Lotus mods...mods/pics update 12/22/12, P.3

I finished up the mods for the season for the most part, and sent my car to the bodyshop to fix a few small flaws in the fiberglass. I have a wing off an SC/California Elise for my car that I was planning to install, but I'm too nervous to drill through the fiberglass, so I haven't done it yet. I told the shop about it, and he suggested I paint it matte black, along with the splitter (Splitter is currently a gloss black), because everything on my car is pretty much matte black (scoops/vents, etc) and yellow, except for the wheels, which are gloss black.

I PS'ed some pics of the wing in black, I just can't see it looking good, but a few friends of mine I showed them the pics, and they said it would look hot. What do you think I should do? Leave it yellow or paint it matte black?

Actually, I kind of like the black spoiler. It flows with the side vents.

I like black if it is a separate piece. Sort of like the C Coupe Black Series you got for the dude trading the S6.

It wouldn't come to my mind to have black, *like a bumper*. Yellow please.

I think they both work, its just a matter of preference.

The yellow matches the body very well, but stands out enough on its own.

Where as the black offers a nice contract because the car has other black accents on it. So it blends in well with the overall scheme.

You could go either way.

+1, I really like the black, the yellow kind of makes it look like the rear is missing something to me.

Paint/Buy it yellow and plastidip it black.

Best of both words.

The wing is already yellow, but it's not the right yellow. My car's color is Solar yellow, and the color of the wing is Saffron Yellow. I have a sharp eye, and notice most everything. The color of the wing is 99.9% of my car. The main difference is that my car has a metallic flake in it, while the wing doesn't. The metallic is very subtle, and you can't notice it unless you put your face close to the paint to see it. I could probably get away with putting it on with it being another color and it would go unnoticed. Worst case if it bother's me, I could always take it off and have it painted the correct color.

At this point I'm trying to save a little if possible. I know how much bodywork would cost, but I don't know as much about fiberglass costs to repair. I took the car to one of the best shops in the area. I did NOT expect for it to cost as much as it came out to be (including 3M clearing the panels back again). Hardest pill I had to swallow in a while

I wouldn't disagree, but the wing on the C63 is a lip, very subtle, while this is a lot bigger, definitely would stand out more. Plus the C63 lip is CF..

In all honesty, if you want the best of both worlds get a Carbon Fiber one or get it wrapped in Carbon Fiber, the in the resin/clearcoat, add a bit of black paint to make it smokey so it looks much darker yet you can still see the weave of the CF.

I was going to vote for Matte Black, but now after reading it's not the right yellow... definitely Matte Black! With all of the black accents on the car, I think the black spoiler looks good.

I'd wrap it instead of painting it though. That way it's not permanent if you change your mind down the road.

Gloss black creates a nice contrast and of any car can pull it off it'd be yours since you already have matte blk accents & gloss blk wheels.

Standard Plastidip is flat black...and its removable, easier to install than vinyl, cheaper than paint and more durable than both.

Im not understanding why you say "ew, no."

This S4 is completely plastidipped.

surprised at those saying/considering yellow.

wing has the same design style/curvature as the black side vents. having those pieces black make perfect sense to the eye. you get a nice 3D effect of a black swoop on the trunk flowing to black swoops on either side of the car.
PLUS, your car is yellow...possibly the best color to consider black accents.
PLUS, you already have black wheels.

black on yellow = ROAD TERROR....psychologically

Culturally, of course, yellow on black spells "panic" because of the convention of using it for warning and yield signs, as well as for police tape; more elementally, yellow and black together is a very disturbing combination of absolute negation with what becomes an almost-hysterically hyper-cheerful yellow. Max Luscher, the colour psychologist, says this combination makes yellow the compensation for whatever the black is denying or negating. There is a subliminal message here.

because plastidip is cheap looking, it can look "spotty" depending on how its applied.

I think its a fad, someone was looking for something fun to do one day while they were bored, and this happened.

A lot comes down to the users personal application, but its definitely not a fad, easily removable colored spray in can will be here for a long time to come

Vinyl is definitely a money saving option and reversible, and plastidip is an even cheaper option, 20 bucks and a few hours and you can have a matte black wing to visually check out. You dont have to mount it, but you can put in your trunk and see how you like it. Its cheap quick and you can decide whether or not you want go all the way with a matte black vinyl or paint job

Plastidip can be cheap looking. I've gotten some great results out of it that aren't splotchy at all, but it took me a long time to learn how to get it that way. I wouldn't put it on my car if it looked bad or out of place, trust me...

Its been around since the 70's though...so it's a fad that just now got discovered on car forums.

Yes, I've used plasti-dip for practical applications, I know its not a new product.

Just not my thing.

Either way...Eddie, matte black would look great.

Its such a crazy looking car to begin with, the added contrast just adds more.

Shoof, I think you should go with the Plasti-dip first. It's completely reversible and you'll only spend $10 buck to see what matte black will actually look like on the car.

Funny, the guy at the shop that suggested painting it matte black, after seeing the pics I chopped, says he isn't feeling it and thinks it would look better as body color!

Still undecided, but I always liked the way it looked in the body color. Not 100% sure, but I think I'm going to stick with body color, and as mentioned by some, can always Plasti-coat it to see what it really looks like, worst case spray it after that....But not totally decided yet!

I like it without the spoiler, that thing just looks so...bulky and heavy.

I would say black if it was smaller but I don't like this picture how the spoiler hangs down the rear quarter panel.

It just looks tacky to me. Well obviously, it is your car but my opinion is I would leave it off.

Beautiful car by the way, always loved the Elise.

I vote for black, but I also suggest vinyling or plasti dipping the front reflectors black.

Shoof, I would definitely paint it black. The curvature of the wing matches the angle and curve of the black "C" behind the door. Plus, it makes the definition of the wing stand out when it's black. The contrast in color is good too-it gives the car a more aggressive look.
