Ferrari Nets Record Price at Auction

NEW YORK (May 19) -- A 1961 Ferrari California Spyder sold for $10,894,900 at an auction in Maranello, Italy, Saturday. It was the highest price ever paid for a vintage car at auction, according to RM Auctions and Sotheby's, the companies that organized the sale.

The previous record was set in 1990 when Sotheby's sold a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO in Monaco for $10,756,000.

But that was a race car, not a convertible designed for driving on the street, pointed out McKeel Hagerty, president of Hagerty Insurance, a company that insures high-value collectible cars in Europe and North America.

Ferrari race cars have traditionally sold for much higher figures than the company's street cars, Hagerty said.

"Ferrari 250 GTO's are now selling privately for twice that," he said

So, does that mean people are arranging $20 million private deals for these cars?

What a beautiful car.

I remember going to the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" in the mid eighties just to see the car. If I can recall correctly, three of them were replicated for the movie, all based on of all things, an MG chassis. One was reportedly sold to a collector in Vancouver, Canada in the late eighties. I remember seeing one there at a distance in the early nineties, but was too far away to see if it was real or not.

It's sad that these new idiots can't get their facts straight when it comes to the ferrari knockoff in Ferris Beuller's day off.

I'm not sure it's that much, but I bet it's close. There is one in Calgary the owner supposedly paid $18m CAD for.

I thought the Bueller Ferrari was a replica built on a Corvette chassis, engine and transmission.
Yes, the 250 GTOs were great looking, even if I'm generally partial to the Pininfarina mid-engine Ferraris.

I've detailed an F40 and the owner also had a 250GT California (along with 10 other cars). What a sick ass car in person

There were 51 250GT California SWB's (Short Wheelbase) built, most of them spec'd to the owner's desires so no two are exactly alike. 10 Million was over twice the top estimate, and it apparently was a war between two bidders that simply wouldn't give up.

Egads, 10 mil. That's wacky money.
