Engine size vs warm up time
Engine size vs warm up time
I'm hearing that 4 cylinder engines typical warm up mush faster than V6.
I have 2015 TLX with a 4 cylinder engine and a 2017 RDX with the standard V6.
Last week we went thru very frigid weather in NJ and I notice the TLX (I4) takes much longer to warm up than the RDX (V6). Both car have about 110k miles on it and they both had the coolant replace during service. I get heat much quicker from the RDX within 2 miles of driving while the TLX takes more that 5 miles before I get the heat. On the TLX it takes much longer for the temp gauge to reach the middle of the range (a hairline below it mid point). Does this sound right ?
In both case I'm EZ on the gas pedal while the car is cold. I've noticed this for years so this is nothing new.
Anyone notice this ?

Not necessarily. A 4 cylinder makes less heat because less cylinders but also has considerably less mass to heat up before the tstat pops open so it would/should probably be a wash. Honestly, a 3 mile difference probably is a wash lol. Could be an air bubble in the system but that doesn't sound like it. It's probably totally normal and just the way the systems are designed.
You need to be easy on the go pedal until the oil heats up, not the coolant.
