According to current tests with the M5, the E55 is still faster than it. The numbers for the M5 were not that impressive from what i remember reading. Something seems off about the video. At most i would expect them to be even.

Pretty weak if you ask me. Had they gone from a stop the E55 would have been harder to catch because of its superior low end. BTW the E55 is faster in the 1/4 than the M5.

I'd still take the outgoing E39 M5 over the E55 AMG. Straightlines are great and all but I like curvy roads as well.

e55 is faster, e55 is quicker, e55 has more power.... :blahblahblah:

No matter which way you stretch it the M5 will still beat the fuck out of the E55 in all out handling. Where it really counts. Who cares if how fast the car is in a straight line....big deal. Get the results in the twisties.

Shame the M5 looks

how about 8250 rpm out of a V10??? Seriously.

well I found some substantive data here, but the M5's performance figures are only estimates.

http://motortrend.com/roadtests/luxu...mb/index7.html

a few comments from various sources:

I haven't driven the new M5, but I had a '03 E55, so I'll give you my perspective on that car. The E55 has tremendous power (469 HP & 516 lb/ft of torque) and is scary fast in a straight line. I'd go so far as to say it has too much power for the car (suspension, tires, etc.) to handle. That's the good news. The bad news is the brakes (although they are huge Brembos) are horrible. The E55 uses the same brake-by-wire system as on the SLs, and the pedal feel is very unnatural and non-linear--almost like an on/off switch. I absolutely hated them. The steering is numb and the handling is terrible--even for a 4,200 lb sedan. I sold it after 4 months.

I enjoy driving my 545i so much more than the E55. And I don't get all those rice rockets wanting to race me at every stop light!
The E55 is really like an American car --> incredible torque and lots of horsepower, but little/no refinement in the handling, braking and other aspects of the driving experience. Thus, it drives and handles like the large and heavy barge that it is.

The M5 was designed and tuned for the driving experience, which BMW does better than anyone else (OK -- Porsche buffs may dispute this, but until Porsche designs and sells a 4 door sedan that outperforms the M5, it's just handwaving). Thus, BMW focused on a naturally aspirated engine (not forced induction) coupled to a well tuned SMG transmission. Further, the naturally aspirated engine was tuned for a relatively flat torque curve over a large power band (i.e., a very high revving engine), which the 7 speed SMG is optimized to provide the most useful torque and power to the wheels for most driving conditions.

With a supercharged engine, the E55 has an awesome amount of torque (516 lb-ft) and this torque helps it to accelerate just slightly faster than the M5. However, we don't always drive in a straight line, so this massive amount of torque is not useful in the twisties and around corners (e.g., an "absolute pig around corners") as the engine easily overpowers the suspension design. Thus, as noted in the Motor Trend article, the M5 provides a superior driving experience overall and this driving experience is immensely gratifying to most drivers.
You couldnt have said it any better "Guest". Its a damn chrysler with a peace sign on the front now. Its such a shame what theyve done to it. I loved the W210 E55 with Black/white REAL german interior. lol im such a hater, i should stop
I might drive a Benz some day............................................... When I'm 80.
I owned a '03 E55. I didn't like the driving experience at all, but the styling was beautiful. I thought the seats were among the best sport seats I've sat in (plus I had drive-dynamic seats, which inflated the side bolsters while cornering to keep you in place--very cool--I believe the M5 will offer as an option). The front & rear bumper detailing and side skirts were aggressive but tasteful, and the wheels were beautiful.

It's true throughout the whole M and AMG lines. If you want serious grunt and comfort, go AMG. If you want an awesome handling car that drives like a race car, go M.

Different strokes for different folks.

I guess its too easy to look at the hp numbers and think the M5 is like waaay faster than the E55. Of course, an explanation of the video is also needed.

you did some good research

you know though, I never had any doubt that the new M5 would be faster than the E55. which is why, the video didn't surprise me.

Just to put the E60 M5 into perspective, we're talking about a sports sedan capable of 205 mph (ungoverned).

Good post Srika.....goes well with the reason for the preference I stated in my original post.

SportAuto magazine tested it from 100-200 kph (62-124 mph) and it was faster than a LOT of very fast cars. Check out the results:

-996 GT2 8.4 s
*BMW M5 E60 8.8 s
-Murcielago 8.9 s
-Gallardo 9.0 s
-575M Maranello 9.3s
-996 GT3 RS 9.3 s
-SL55 AMG 9.5 s
-996 GT3 (2003) 10.2 s
-996 Turbo 10.4 s
-360 Stradale 11.1 s
-360 Modena 11.4 s

I find it hard to believe that the M5 is faster than the Murcielago & 575 Maranello from a roll.

German engineering pwns j00....

seriously... the Germans... all their cars are tuned for top end. It's in the gearing. Even "normal" German cars are built for speed...

oh yeah and, the M5 is not that much faster than either Lambo or Ferrari...

btw.. where is the E55 on that list??

Not really. You ever seen the gearing on those Italians? Like Sricka said, its in the gearing. The Murcielago has some rediculous gearing like 66 mph in first.

A lot of times it's not the power, it's the gearing. For example, a buddy of mine has a trans am with a 3.73 gears and is stock and another buddy has a trans am with 3.23 gears with lid, exhaust and dynos about 25 horses more. Both cars are autos, both cars were dead even when stock. But, ever since the first guy did the gear change he is always about 3 or 4 cars ahead off the line and about 6 off a roll. He also dropped from a 13.5 to a 13.1.

I agree.

AMG's are more 'powerful' and more luxurious
M's are more agile and drive like race cars

M5 turns better, brakes better, blahblahblah...we know that already.

Every car has its strong and weak points, just choose your cup of tea.
