It better still be under warranty, or you'll spend a lot of money on it...

MBs used to be really reliable until about the late 90s from what I understand, then they got pretty bad.

Out of all the AMG offerings, that's the one I'd get, but yeah, expect maintenance to be mucho expensive.

wrong. we did work on one a while back. pulley, tune, headers, cat delete. and the guy beats the DEATH out of it and it still runs strong, roughly 15-20k miles later, totaling around 80k

their #1 problem is the intercooler pump, they fail ALL THE TIME. when the pump fails it disconnects the s/c so your running a 5.5 NA motor, untill you turn it off and back on. just change out the bump for the upgraded one and your set.

we have done SO many e55's and none of them have issues(with the motor). some issues people had was with the self closing trunk and a few other stupid things.

plus you can get one now for around 35-40k CPO. AMG's loose their value SOOOO much. "the only thing that beats an AMG is its depreciation value" lol or something like that

the most recent one we did, 181mm pulley, headers, cat delete, beefier tune, k&n's, quaife LSD, air box modification. we added all the claimed whp additions and it came to 612whp, 634wtq

talk about a beast... i was scared shitless in it, no lie.

this isnt it, but its very similar

Like its been said, AMG service cost is a cut above regular MB service. But holy shit does that E55 sound amazing! I think I came. I've always been a fan of MB engines over BMW's engines, mainly because of the beastly V8s that they make. Amazing sound.... just a shame that none of the AMGs or V8s IIRC come with a proper clutch pedal-actuated manual.

You know what's more expensive to maintain than a brand-new Mercedes? A used one. Not sure which year of E55 you're looking at, but be prepared, as others have said, for very expensive repair bills. I you don't mind spending the coin, enjoy the benefits of this high-maintenance German.

It's all German cars =P. I was talking to a guy with a 1990 Porsche 928, and he mentioned replacing some rear bearing. He told me the part was $200.00, and 4400 in labor. Yikes!

That's an understatement. I looked over old receipts from the previous owners of our E350. There were tons of parts replaced on the car before it came into our hands. Over $5000 worth of parts replaced due to wear and tear on a 2006 with very low miles. I can’t imagine the repair bills on an AMG.

And the scary part is that it is normal. Stay away from 2004 and back. Get at least the 2006 from what I have read online.

If this car isn't a financial stretch for you, buy it and enjoy it. However, as others have said, don't buy it unless you have money set aside for the very expensive maintenance that is inevitable on a car like the E55.

If you like the way the car drives but have any concern about upkeep, call several service places and ask about maintenance and "normal" breakdown item costs for the E55.

the E55 Amg is a hot car. if you can find one in your area that in good shape and hasn't been beat on get it.
if not a good second option a Audi RS4. if it was me RS4 vs E55 i think i'd go RS4 cause of a stick tranny and all wheel drive.

I had an older 2000 model for about 6 months. It was loaned to me to get around cause I needed a car.
Also got my 1st speeding ticket in it. 109 in a 70 Expensive fine, but no points pleading it down.
Nice car.

Though I've driven the E63, I've not tried the E55. If I could be assured of 17mpg+ possibilities, I'd consider a used one myself.

Do it! I've been eyeing these for a while. The prices on them have dropped with the launch of the E63 and now a totally redesigned E class... so there are some deals to be had. I would recommend trying to find one with an extended warranty so try to buy as new as you can afford. If not... at least set aside some money to purchase an extended warranty.

E55 with an extended warranty = satisfaction for years and years to come.

Do it!!
