Which place do you guys use to replace windshields?

There are so many places on the web I don't know where to start.

I don't even know if I want the OEM glass installed because I have heard it chips/cracks pretty easily.

More to come.

Yeah, it does suck. It was in the stars though, nothing I could have done to avoid it.

It has been over 2 years since I have had this car, and I never thought I would go this long without getting a new windshield. I drive on one of the worst roads in NJ (287) everyday. The irony is this happened on a local one lane road.

No one was in front of me, but one dump truck passed me on the opposite side and I heard a bang, didn't even see the rock.

Was going close to 45 mph while a trunk passed me on the opposite side...because of that the impact was very hard. (45 + truck speed = boom)

Man that sucks! I hate those friggin trucks that dont secure their load. I make a very conscious effort to not be behind them.

A truck carrying concrete cut me off and splattered my windshield last week. Luckily I got it all off.

Are you going through insurance? I heard theyll replace it for free but it counts as a claim.

I make an effort to not drive behind/side of a truck, any truck. But in this case, I couldn't do anything.

Not in good ol Jersey.

I have a 500 ded for comprehensive, so I might not even bother with insurance.
I believe this will cost me somewhere between 600 - 800.

I have heard that using comprehensive should not raise the premiums, but since I have a nice 550/6 month premium, I don't even want to touch that.

Okay, an update on the quotes I have been getting.

I called up several places which I googled, and I got a variety of estimates.

From safelite I got an estimate of 770 using their special glass, not OEM.
From my acura dealer I got an estimate of 770 for glass and 150 for install.
From glassone.com I got an estimate of 574 and they use OEM glass. But they said the OEM glass will not have any markings on it, like Honda in this case. I don't know if I buy that, what do you guys think? And why is this place so much cheaper with OEM glass?

That sucks. I had that happen with a huge sheet of ice off a semi a couple of years ago. Also going the opposite direction. It actually bowed the windshield in toward me. And you're right - not a dang thing you can do about it.

I would just do the dealer when it comes to glass, I would stay away from that cheap spot.

The dealer replaced my windshield with non-OEM after they broke it themselves (repairing a dent in my roof).

I was kind of upset at first, but really, I can't tell a difference at all. The only thing missing is the Honda logo. It has the exact same dot matrix pattern, same headliner tint, everything. Perfect fit.

I'd tell you what brand it was, but there are no markings on it whatsoever that I can see.

Does you insurance not cover glass? In FL glass coverage is included with comprehensive coverage. No deductable or negative points for glass replacment.
I had this happen on my old 300M. But it was at 80 on the HW. Scared the hell out of me!
BTW I used safelite with an OEM replacment.

Enjoy the perk as long as you live in FL. I don't think any other state has no cost windshield replacement, unless you specifically get that kind of protection.

I found something online which has some pretty decent prices.

377 with shipping + 125 for install = ~500 not bad for OEM glass.

In a way ur lucky its just the glass. A month ago, a tire exploded off a dump truck and hit my A-pillar (now has a huge dent) and continued on to the driver door, rear doors, rear quarter panel and finally the trunk. The ENTIRE left side of my car is scratched. It looks painful. The dump truck drove away. So i'm just left with the scratches.

So i feel ur pain. So now i have a dump truck phobia.

But even in FL it will count as a "claim."

No you dont pay deductable, but can they raise your rates eventually over it?

$500 is way to much, call your local body shop and ask who they use.

I got my CL for $250 installed (guy came to my house)

I have gotten quotes for as low as 240 bucks and as high as 900.
I figured I would just buy the damn glass myself and have it installed at a local shop. This way I know exactly what I am getting.

The OEM windshield is a laminate with sound insulation material to reduce road noise. Make sure any NON-OEM replacement has it.

That sucks. I had that happened to my CL-S about 2 years ago. A rock about the size of a goffball came flying done from the overhead ramp.

I think I used Safelite Autoglass and cost around $250-300. They just came to my office and fixed it in the parking lot.

Really? I had progressive. Call them out on it. Unless the law changed. It's only the windshield. All other windows go as compreshive & are subject to claims.

Good thing you weren't riding a motorcycle when that happened. Something like that could practically knock you off your bike.

that's a dumb way to do it because the glass guys get glass a lot cheaper then you will

Most body shops also bring in a glass guy when they need work done, most don't have one in house

Yes, 650 seems to be the average from all the places I have looked.
I was surprised to find the oem glass online going for 377 w/molding & shipping.
I think I am going to go that route, I have an installer ready to do the work for 125. First thing tomorrow morning is confirming with the installer and then placing the order shipped directly to the installer.

i tried to avoid oem glass because the god damn windshield had so many chips in it...i dont know if it was cheap glass but it was a huge piece of shit. i couldnt avoid that sound layer but hopefully i have better luck with the new glass i put in. it seems like you got a pretty good deal on the glass plus install.

Okay guys, need your help.

Getting the glass myself is not going to work out, after placing the order online, the shop calls me and tells me it will be an extra 100 bucks for shipping. Screw that.

Now I have called a bunch of local places, and I am down to two. Help me decide.

Place #1: 531 + tax using OEM glass ordered from the Acura dealer.
Place #2: 369 + tax using ABTECH glass, same as OEM manufacture, but not OEM glass. The glass does have an acoustic film layer just like the OEM glass.

What to do, what to do.....

Safelite manufactures their own glass, whereas most other companies use PPG products.

Acura OEM is probably the best bet.

Glassone is trying to stick it to you. I got the windshield replaced on the '05 not too long ago and they told me that it's the same as OEM just with no markings. I inspected the windshields and they are not the same. They are OEM-spec, but not 100% the same stuff. My guess is that they are going to install a PPG glass for you. The distortions are pretty bad around the edges compared to OEM. It is NOT just "OEM without the markings."

IMO, go to the Acura dealership. But it sounds like yours is kind of ripping you off. I got a quote for like 580 or something. You can go through any of those companies; they can order an OEM glass for you, so choose whoever gives you the cheapest price.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply PA

Also thanks to everyone for the helpful comments.

I have made a decision to go with a local installer named Normans Glass. They initially quoted me around 770 for the replacement, which used an aftermarket glass. I asked them if they can get an OEM glass. They quoted me 531 + tax for OEM glass. They also called the local acura dealership to verify when they can get the glass from them. So I am certain the glass is OEM since it is coming from the dealership.

The install is scheduled for next Tuesday. I hope everything goes well and Athena is back to her normal self.

It all depends on the adjuster. He flags it in the system as "At fault" or "No fault" through a claim code. The rating program then decides if it's going to increase your rate based on the code. How do I know this? I coded the stupid programs for Progressive years ago....

Did you try Glass Doctor/Harmon AutoGlass? I replaced my windshield for less than $200. It got replaced next day on my driveway.
