Dumb Asses
Two more arrested for interstate drag racing
Two more men were arrested early Sunday for drag racing on Interstate 85 North – this time in Gaston County.
N.C. Troop K.L. Cornwell said he drove up on a rolling roadblock near the Lowell exit, and saw two black souped-up Honda Civics lining up in the left lanes, with a silver “flag car” in the right.
“They were running about 55 mph, when the driver in the silver car stuck his hand out the window and gave the signal to go,” Cornwell said. “The two black Hondas took off.”
So did Cornwell.
He got around the roadblock, and was able to stop one of the black Hondas, which he clocked at 87 mph in a 60 mph zone.
He arrested the driver of that car, 19-year-old Brandon Best, and charged him with driving with a revoked license, pre-arranged speed competition, driving 87 mph in a 60-mph zone, wreckless driving and resisting arrest.
Best was being held in the Gaston County Jail Sunday night under $25,000 secured bond.
Cornwell also arrested the designated flagman in the silver car. He’s charged with aiding and abetting pre-arranged racing. He declined to give that driver’s name because the incident is still under investigation.
Sunday’s arrest follows a drag-racing arrest in Mecklenburg last month. Cornwell didn’t know if the Gaston County incident is related to that one.

Go to all the trouble of a rolling road block, start car, etc and forget to watch for the popo?

Dumb asses racing on the highway in the first place.

They've got a bunch of confiscated cars that the cops run as decoys around here.
You'd think a patrol car would be easier to spot.
Especially if he's tailing you.

The Mecklenburg County Police seized an EVO, a 350Z and an '03 Mustang Cobra in street racing busts. They now use them to catch street racers but there's never been any word of these undercover cars catching anyone.
Here's one article I found. I can't seem to find the others.

There was also a video by one of the local news stations that showed the Cobra and 350Z. The EVO wasn't publicized, as far as I know.

You know, I have to give these guys (and the other ones on 485) credit, the whole roadblock idea to prevent risks to other motorists is pretty ingenius. I don't agree with street racing, but that has nothing to do with the quality of the idea.
What I always find amusing is people wonder why there's so much street racing...what did they think would happen when they closed the dragstrip?

, we have some camaro's and Chrysler 300's. I've even seen a black tinted up Buick Century pull someone over...it sucks.

It's crazy the cars the cops have around here. Definitely not something I'm used to. I've seen so many different unmarked cars pulling people over. I'll tell you one thing... it's slown my ass down quite a bit. I don't drive anywhere near the same way since we moved as I did when we lived in NY...

Don't speed and always wear your seatbelt.

But yeah, definitely much more show of force here then I was used to.
Big or small... illegal is illegal. If you don't want to get pulled over... don't break the law. Pretty simple stuff Race Director

I moved here from Pittsburgh a few years ago and I'd say Charlotte has 3x the police force that I'm used to. It's both good and bad. Charlotte has a lot of crime, but it also puts a lot of cops out there that have nothing better to do than pull you over for something small. Probably just to collect revenue to help pay their salaries.

^ That's the thing... you don't see them b/c they are in regular, unmarked cars. Don't be fooled though.. they are out there. So far I've seen an STS (white), Malibu (red), Ford F-150 (white/tan), Ford Explorer (green), late 80's/early 90's Ford Thunderbird (green), Chevy Tahoe (white), plus I've read about the ones mentioned above.
And all of those cars look like your neighbor's car. The only reason I knew they were cops was b/c I saw them with someone pulled over (and we got stopped once by the Thunderbird in a limo... long story). I've even seen them where they have trinkets on the rear deck or a vanity type front plate (one had a NY Yankees plate) making them look completely pedestrian.
So yeah, they're there... you just don't realize it and you won't until they pull you over.

^ Well I guess I am such a good driver they haven't had a reason to pull me over
I do however see the Impala cops around sometimes. Those are pretty easy to spot. One time I saw an S2000 and I kept turning around to make sure I wasn't seeing things. It was a blue one.

Always look for the camera and lights at the top of the front window, and the lights on either side of the third brake light. Regardless of make, most (most, not all) unmarked cars still have these.
around my parts, they were running grey Dodge Chargers, same paint as used on the staties but were unmarked.
they also were running Black dodge chargers, tinted with factory chrome rims that cruise down the highway. every time i see a charger i treat it as a op and proceed cautiously.

I could be wrong, but the way I read *this* report was that it was regular Trooper, not un-marked.
Of course, it doesn't say clearly one way or another, but given where it is, my *guess* is that it was a regular cruiser.
And trackrunner, I agree about 485 - I am on that road A LOT and almost never see (marked) CMPD or Troopers.
I agree, I'm just saying the police are much more strict here. A ticket for a seatbelt violation in Pittsburgh is unheard of. There's also a lot more traffic and many more accident here in Charlotte. It's still a very nice city, the street racing just can't seem to stay out of the papers.

We always had races in industrial parts of the city where it would be very easy to ditch the cops in the event that they would come. Oh what Fast & Furious did to our community back in the day.
