Drove a Porche 911 Turbo today

I know this is off topic, but my Brother-in-Law just traded in his 2009 M3 for a 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo, 6 speed manual. I took it out for a ride in my area around twisty roads. Had it @ 160 KMH is 4th gear, (100 MPH), yes I know this is stupid, on a twisty road and that thing clung to the corners like nothing I had ever driven. Apparently it is 500 HP plus. Glad I only have my TL, because my liscence would be gone with the Porsche. Well it was fun. Back to the serene TL.

Lol very nice. I'm still waiting for the VP of marketing at my job to hand over the keys to his carerra 6speed. He's offered several times but I haven't been there long enough to take it, in my opinion.

Did a job for a client of ours and he just purchased the 2009 (new at the time) Carrera S convertible 6 speed. I was talking to him about it and there just happen to be a great strip right in front of the building he owned...( i would say approx half mile) I took it for a spin.... after getting to the end and turning in the culdesac words just cannot describe the type of performance and handling of such a beast!

The 996/997 Turbo is absolutely incredible. I got to drive several during a tenure at a local Audi/Porsche dealer and I swear that thing has a rocket that pops out of the back. I gave it no more than half throttle and the digital speedo was racking up like this: 21-32-49-58-72...at which point I slowed down as I was in a 35 mph zone.

it's amazing what kind of power they get from a 6 cylinder motor. Th boxster is relativerly slow but fast in the corners. The 911 is wicked n/a but crazy with the twin turbo.....

AC Cobra 427 tale

A older colleague (Gary) had a amusing experience when he was working part-time at a service station in West Virginia on a quiet Sunday afternoon back in the mid-70's. Besides the usual array of mundane vehicles in for service in the back parking lot, there was a AC 427 Cobra (belonging to a friend of the gas station owner). Gary and another co-worker (a classmate from the high school he attended) started to debate what it would be like to drive the Cobra. Gary decided to take the Cobra out for a little drive, figuring if he kept the miles low the owner wouldn't notice. Gary's co-worker tried to talk him out of it to no avail. He powered up the Cobra, let it warm up and took it for a 10 mile country road drive. He tried to explore the limits of the tires (mid-70's Goodyears) while getting used to the heavy steering and stiff brakes.

Midway through he decided to WOT in the top two gears, then after apexing a moderate right curve he opened it up in 2nd and did a instant spin and wound up in the shoulder of the opposite lane with the rear tires only a couple feet from the edge of a decent hill (no guardrail). He sheepishly drove back to to the station and his co-worker said his face was white as a sheet. The station owner and Cobra owner never found out about his test drive. Gary figured with his inexperience, 70's tire technology, low weight, and a short wheelbase it was a bad combination as all he wanted to do was a oversteer slide through the turn exit.

After college, Gary got a C4 vette and always wrote down the mileage when taking it in for service.

Never driven a 911 Turbo, only my brother's Cayenne Turbo and a friend's 944 Turbo. The 944 was a blast to drive but no where near a 997 turbo.

I've only sat shotgun in a Porsche 911 Turbo 6 speed.

Like the OP said, they go around corners like you wouldn't believe .. not to mention the straight line speed is intoxicating.

I'd love to take a car like that to the track!

What's really amazing is the fuel economy they get along with the crazy power.

IMO, on the street you can have a lot more fun with a base boxster than you can have in a 997 TT. Before you start flaming me, just hear me out. If you roll into the throttle in a 997TT (or even a 996) you are speeding within 3 seconds and you have to lay off the gas. You don't really get to "work" the gear box as you have power in any gear at almost any RPM.

Contrast that with a base model Boxster (which handles better than a 911 BTW) you don't have all that power on tap at all times. You actually get to downshift for power, you actually have to be in the correct gear to get good acceleration. In short, you have to drive the car well for it to be quick. Any knuckle head with a license can drive a 911 turbo fast, it takes a good driver to extract the performance from a base Boxster. If you are looking for a car that you can ring the performance out of without having to go to the track or risk losing your driving privileges, the base Boxster (or Cayman) is the car to have. If your looking for a sock for you pants get the 911.

^ Using that logic, imagine a good driver extracting the performance out of a 911 turbo? I'm sure it would be loads more fun if you were comfortable doing so.

I would agree it's less terrifying to drive than a 911 turbo, but I don't believe any "knuckle head" with a license can drive a 911 turbo fast .. those cars are MENTAL.

You missed the point about not having to go to the track to really drive the car.

What's the speed limit where you live? Great, the 997tt can do that in 2nd gear, and from a standing start it took less than 4 seconds, game over unless you want to break the law.

The modern Porsche is nothing like the cars from the 80's. The power delivery of a current 911 turbo is very linear and doesn't really have any surge spots. Check the specs if you want, but the 480 lbs/ft of torque is FROM 1950 to 5000 RPM, that's basically a flat line of power from when you've fully let off the clutch until you are preparing to shift. All of the old rules of driving a 911 are essentially off the table, their electronic stability control is absolutely phenomenal and even if you shut it off, an ABS event on the front wheels will reactivate it. In most cases modern electronic wizardry has replaced the need for actual skill, all you need now is money and a little bit of common sense.

All of the current Porsche cars all turn bad drivers into good drivers, good drivers into great drivers, and turn great drivers into champions.

Believe me it's not hard to drive a 911 turbo fast and any knuckle head can do it. I've personally been in many with inexperienced knuckle heads who just happen to have the cash to buy them. That said, there is a difference between driving one fast and driving one at the it's limits. Driving one at it's limits is best left to the experts.

I understand the point you're trying to make, but hand the keys to a 500hp RWD 911 Turbo to a relatively inexperienced driver and lets see that "Knuckle Head" drive quickly. Computers can't sort out a slide and having the ass end of the car hitting a concrete barrier.

I guess our definitions of "driving a car fast" and "driving a car to it's limits" differ is all. I see it being almost the same thing.

I own a plain 997 Cab with PDK. It's a great car and I love love love Porsche road feel -- but I would much rather have a Boxster for daily driving; the handling is sublime. I can live without the power difference -- I can't live without the child seat in the back, so it's the 997 for me.

The new Boxster S Spyder has 320hp ... I bet that thing kicks some serious ass.

Anyone know if the 2011 Boxster S is going to have more than 255hp?

A 2008 Boxster S had 295 hp, a 2010 with direct injection is 310 hp, even the 2010 base model has 255 hp. So I'm gonna say yes, the 2011 Boxster S will have more than 255hp.

Here is a question for you. Would you rather have a 2 yr old Turbo or a new GT-R? Weekend car, not a DD.

ROFL ... Stupid internet. I did a search for "2010 Boxster S specs" and got something that said 255hp. LOL ... Oops?

I remember James May saying last week that the Boxster S had 310hp but I thought maybe we got a nerfed Boxster.

310hp ... In a Boxster ... Oh my

You don't have to justify it's purpose to me, I'm a full fledged fanboy. More my thought was that the current base Boxster is laying down more hp then the 1st gen S did.

What's the issue you have with the convertible roof?

FYI, I looked at a Cayman last year (not enough room), but not at the Boxster, as I generally favor chassis rigidity over convertible roof.

well, having a car like that you have to drive with the top down.
I usually wear a hat when driving to keep the sun out of my eyes, i'm 6' . I start to get a headache from the buffetting of the wind against my hat or hair if i go w/o a hat.

There are a few turns on the back roads that i can take about 10 mph faster in the boxster than any other car we have had. I can keep my foot in the throttle much longer or quicker exiting the turn. It is very surprising how tight it really is.

Porsche are just magnificent, my dream is to drive a 911 turbo someday.

In fact, I saw a 911 turbo burning the shit out of a bike and a modded Chevy Colbat (thing was fast rofl) just the other night on Artesia/Crenshaw.

I could barely keep up with those 3 in my car.
