I figured I ask here, I have look around but can not find anybody who teaches how to drive manual in NYC. Is there anybody in the tri state NY, NJ, PA, CT area that anybody knows about.

Thanks in advance

You dont really need a teacher if you understand how the clutch/gears work. Its all about timing, you can only learn that through practice. I drove stick only twice in my life before buying my MT TSX. Within a week I was cruising around in downtown SF.

Same here. I understood the basics behind driving MT, and i got the TSX. A couple of times around the block, and down to LBI I went with my dad.

Rent a stick car, and practice yourself. My car is stick, its my first car, and the only lessons I ever got were, thats the clutch there, use it when you shift gears.... Then I had my brother take me around showing me how it works, and the basics of it all...In no time I was shifting smoothly, accelerating on a hill with no problems, and so on... Its not hard at all, just like it was said, it takes practice.

But, getting a teacher, or somebody who knows what they are doing is also good, probably better on the clutch if you do it this way, but its up to you.

Good luck in learning, its really the best way to drive...

And its so much more fun...

I think driving schools can teach you if you really want to learn. I drive stick every day...Learned the way everyone here is saying....Jumping in a car and making a lot of mistakes until I got it right. Rented cars, of course.. ;-)

I don't think you can rent a stick car anymore. I've never seen them at the rental lots at the NY airports.
I learned to drive stick in NYC. Everyone is right, it's a practice thing. There's really no teaching involved.

I'm sure you can find someone to rent a MT car from. Possibly a driving school. I would not reccomend just getting in the car and driving around NYC though. Just because Fuzzy can do it, doesn't mean everyone else can. However if you think you can do it, go for it you never know. Practice my friend.

different cars have a different style, u have to get to learn

honda cars have a rather light clutch and a high release point, while the euro cars mostly have a heavy clutch and relases sooner, some ppl have to get used to that when u drive different cars

it takes practice, if u are not good at it try to make it perfect b4 you move on to double clutch and downshifting

o wow.. i remember when i was learning how to downshift. i always messed up, not because i didnt know where the gears were, but just judging when to put it into what gear was definitly messing me up. but once learned, definitly much better of driving experience than any autos
