Double the speed limit - lose your license?

This isn't a morality question.

I've always heard that if you get caught driving double the speed limit, and get caught that you will lose your license/cop will just take it on the sport, you're going to jail, and the car will be impounded.

I just searched online, but I can't find anything about it. The only thing I can find is that in NJ:
1-14 mph over limit: 2 points
15-29 mph over limit: 4 points
30 or more mph over limit: 5 points

or true?

What the heck?! Is NJ that strict? That's a lot of points off your record... I think that going over 100 in Cali= automatically loose liscence... but I'm not sure.

I do not think that is the law but it would not bother me if it was, except if the speed limit was unreasonably low....like it can be in a number of locations. Sounds like a question for Officer.com's traffic forum.

I've heard that rumor but I don't think it's true.

Also for onebadna1nsx, the point system is very different in most states. In NJ for instance you need 12 points in two years before you get your license suspended. In CA you can get your license revoked if you get 4 points in one year. It's a bit stricter but in CA even the most heinous tickets come with a maximum of 2 points.

So far no one has confirmed...but as a related question (if is is true), what happens if it occurs in another state? Like say I was in PA driving 135mph, where the speed limit is 65 on a major highway. I get caught. Say that is the law in PA, can they take my license even though I'm from NJ? Will NJ take it of will I just get 2 points (from the multi state program)?

in ca, 100mph over gets the car impounded. don't know about the license though. a friend got nailed for 100+ and the officer wrote him up for 95mph and explained that because she did that, the car won't be impounded.

that offence may be reported to your home state. look up the "driver's license compact" (i'm i remember correctly.) it covers state reciprocacy.

In New York, if found guilty that is normally true. Its an arresting offense.

No but it sure is goddamned expensive if you get caught! Most places, triple digits is an automatic trip to jail. The points for going that fast may be enough to get you suspended. Luckily, alot of cops would rather be out catching real criminals than doing hours of paperwork on some dope going 125.

<<--- been caught going well in excess of 100mph twice - let go both times. Retired from such activities now, not interested in seeing if I can strike out on the 3rd try.

true for ny... but i think it only applies to HIGHWAY... sine the speed limit is 55... going 55mph over the speed limit will give you well over 11 points which revokes your license

I know for TX, it's double the speed limit and your ass is going to the county jail. My friend got caught for 135 (speed limit 65), and went to county for the night and got his car impounded, but then again that's TX law, not NJ. I never even heard of a point system....

Here in Ontario they're proposing a 50kp/h over impounded car, $10000 fine law. Right now it's an immediate summons and 6 demerits. 30-49 over is 4 points, 16-29 is 3, 0-15 is 2.

Not a typo, new law to deter racing. Yes, it is lame.

That might be local policy but it is not Texas state law.

This is going to be one hell of a bump (like 5 years lol) but in case someone looks at this as I did, I found the answer:

"If the speed is excessive or the violation is willful a court is likelier to suspend a license, for a time period left to the discretion of the sentencing Judge, rather then impose a jail sentence.
Excessive speeding shall be defined as traveling in excess of 30mph or more above the posted speed limit on any roads including but not limited to any major highway or interstate
The courts may impose up to 15 days in jail following a conviction for this charge, although it is unusual for courts to exercise such discretion."

I better think twice next time I feel like topping out at 155 at 4am on the interstate lol

Over 100 mph in Oregon gets you a $1,500 fine, a car impounded and a loss of license for one year.

One hell of a bump indeed. But, the info is good to know....particularly as I'm good for 100mph at some point each time I hope on an interstate.

Every thing varies by state. Here anything 21 over is considered excessive (and worse on your insurance than dui) once triple digits are achieved its really frowned upon and you are usually taken to jail, you receive bail amount and a court date.

I personally think you are crazy for doing stupid stuff like that. I remember reading the cops tracked down a Ferrari doing 155 over the Driscoll bridge. Guy was fined, as I recall reading, thousands and thousands of dollars.

Maybe in your part of Texas.

Depends on the cop here.

Damn.

In Allen county of north Dallas, the maximum fine they can issue is $300. In Texas overall, an officer can not take you to jail for speeding (according to one of our local Bail Bondsman). However, 25 over is grounds for reckless driving, & then becomes at the officer's discretion.
