Does air intake filter size matter?

The other day I swapped out my filter. Went from a cone filter with 7 inches of material to one that had just 5.5 inches of filter material. Both are open ended like the one shown below. I've read several other forums saying yes and no. Anyone know for sure if it'll make a difference or not?

well, lets put it this way, it would only make sense that a bigger filter would be better, to a point. Basically, your flow can only go up.... till that point where it has perfect free flow. I bought the biggest K&N cone I could find and slapped that on there for my 3.0

The more air you feed the engine, the better it will breathe. Then again if you give it too much air, it could run lean...soooo It's up to you...

Any differences would be too small for a dyno to even read accurately.
