The wife and I were angling towards an E60 V8 (545i/550i) or a right priced M5 prior to my getting the axe.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

How is the maintenance on these things? I have been contemplating either finding an E60 M5 or E46 M3 for a while now but am leery of maintenance issues with german cars , especially considering that I drive 30~40k a year.

It depends on the year of the car. If the car is purchased with the transferrable warranty and maintenance program, then it may not be bad. I would think SMG cars would have a higher maintenance cost versus a manual.

Regardless, repairs and maintenance will be expensive outside the warranty period.

Yep. Just got through putting new pads and rotors on the front wheels - $1,300.

Oil Change, new filters, etc. - $440.

Come on... if you drive a M5, of course you have to pay to play.

My local dealership will do an oil/filter change for $69.95. That's for up to 7 quarts of 5w-30 synthetic oil -- enough for a 335i or 535i. But the M5 uses 9 quarts of a special 10w-60 oil which costs over $12/quart. BTW, the recommended oil change interval for most current BMW models is every 15K miles (although a lot of folks pay out of pocket for a mid-schedule change just to be safe -- cheap insurance).

Okay, these two messages need to be put together since DanL is close to a proper response to StreetKA. The change interval on the M5 is 15K miles, or about once a year. It actually runs on a special Castrol 15W-60 synthetic, which is pricey, and holds a TON of oil. Also, the price I mentioned earlier included replacing both air filters (about $70 a piece), and a couple other minor services. The oil change itself was $240. Nevertheless, the general consensus is correct - this is not a cheap car to own. If that's what you want, stick to a Honda product.

Cleaning those wheels SUCK! Thank God for Sonax Cleaner.

As ttribe mentioned; any M-Car will be a mint to maintain outside of the warranty period. Actually... Any European car is a mint to maintain outside the warranty period.

Nice a 6MT V10 M5, if I ever got really rich that would be first choice.

Congratulations on the E60 M5! I had an E39 M5 and almost bit the bullet on the E60 a few times. How's the 6 speed, a few reports say that it's not suited to the beast, would love to hear an owner's opinion. Congrats on the Q7 too, I have a 4.2 as well.

Not sure which part of MD, I'm from the Potomac area and you're welcome to cruise up C&C to Great Falls VA on Saturday mornings!

Congrats! Great car!

I just bought a TL-S, and I told my wife that it requires premium. She said, "Are you serious?!" I told her I could have bought an M5, and she's like, "What is that?"

I said it was a very pricey BMW that would require me to fill up every four days at $60 a pop. She was not laughing.

The 6 speed in the E60 M5 is fun. Yes, the SMG was made for the car, but I would rather row the gears myself. Personally, I think the manual trans in the E60 M5 is great.

The Q7 is my daily driver, and the TDI is a torque monster. So far the Q7 does just as well on fuel as my Accord did. The 8 speed automatic keeps the RPM's extremely low at cruising speeds.

I'm located in Damascus. I haven't gone to the C&C event in Great Falls. I've been told it's a good event, with a nice selection of cars and great owners.

That's not far from the truth. Can't help but to enjoy the M5 for what it is and burn through fuel.

How is your M5 treating you?

I do not post much on the "Board" but I see you have been slowly adding mods to your Beast.

My car's been excellent, thanks for asking. Still makes me smile every time I hit the "M" button and mash the gas pedal.

For that reason you rarely see any Germans cars beyond 10 yrs old on the road up here in Canada. Our winters take a toll on them.

The deals are available on these cars. The hard part is locating an unmolested one, with strong maintenance records, and which clears a pre-purchase inspection with flying colors.

But! It can be done.
