A day in the life of an NHTSA agent....

With all the shouting going back and forth over Toyota's recent mess, many are asking why such issues hadn't arisen earlier. Here, for your viewing pleasure, is just a sample of some of the idiotic calls the NHTSA (a vehicle SAFETY administration) gets on a daily basis. Remember, its on the testimony of people just like this that the vast majority of Toyota's problems stem from:

"THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER OR HEAT IS IN USE, THE CONTACT GETS A NOSE INFECTION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE IS NO ODOR IN THE AIR THAT COMES OUT OF THE VENTS, BUT FEELS THAT THE INFECTION MAY BE CAUSED BY THE AIR BEING SATURATED WITH CHEMICALS."

"AT SPEEDS OF LESS THAN 20 MPH, HE DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP OR SLOW DOWN."

"THE CONTACT FOUND A MOUSE NEST TWICE IN THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE AND IS WORRIED THAT THIS CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT IF SOMEONE IS DRIVING AND A SMALL ANIMAL OR SNAKE COMES CRAWLING FROM UNDER THE SEAT."

"A FRIEND AND I WERE ATTEMPTING TO LAUNCH HIS JETSKI. I BACKED MY TRUCK DOWN THE BOAT RAMP AND MY FRIEND WAS ON THE JETSKI. MY FRIEND WAS HAVING TROUBLE GETTING THE JETSKI TO COME OFF THE TRAILER SO, I PUT THE TRUCK INTO PARK AND GOT OUT TO SHOVE THE JETSKI OFF. AS I GOT OUT I NOTICED THE TRUCK LUNGE AND START TO ROLL BACKWARDS. I ATTEMPTED TO REACH MY FOOT BACK IN TO HIT THE BRAKE. BY THIS TIME MY SHOES WERE WET AND BECAUSE OF THE POSITION OF MY BODY, MY FOOT SLIPPED OFF OF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND SMASHED THE GAS PEDAL WHICH CAUSED TRUCK TO TAKE OFF IN REVERSE. AS I WAS STILL HALFWAY IN AND OUT OF THE TRUCK THE DOOR DRUG ME DOWN THE BOAT RAMP AND UNDER THE WATER WITH THE TRUCK. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO GET FREE AND HAD NO SERIOUS INJURIES. THE TRUCK HOWEVER WAS FULLY SUBMERGED AND THE JETSKI TRAILER WAS BROKEN IN THE PROCESS. NOTE: THE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION WAS CHANGED OUT UNDER A WARRANTY CLAIM AT AROUND 10,000 MILES BY THE DEALERSHIP"

"A NEW VEHICLE, THE JEEP COMMANDER, ON A WET HIGHWAY, IS A MAJOR PROBLEM FOR ANYONE BEHIND. REASON, HORRIBLE DESIGN RESULTS IN MORE SPRAY AND MIST KICKED UP THAN AN EIGHTEEN WHEELER. THIS HORRIBLY DESIGNED, UNAERODYNAMIC PILE OF JUNK IS A MAJOR MENACE THAT TURNS A WET HIGHWAY INTO A MOVING CLOUD AND THEY WILL BE THE CAUSE OF A MAJOR PILE-UPS. ALL SHOULD BE BOUGHT BACK AND SCRAPPED. TEST ONE ON A VERY WET ASPHALT HIGHWAY AND MY COMPLAINT WILL BE OBVIOUS TO ALL. BAN THIS VEHICLE BEFORE IT KILLS SOMEONE."

"WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVATED, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY FLIPPED OVER THREE TIMES. THE WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE DRY. DUE TO SHOCK, ALL THE CONTACT COULD REMEMBER WAS CLIMBING OUT OF THE VEHICLE."

Maybe because it's Friday, but I was expecting more funny . The idiocy doesn't surprise me in the least, though.

Not surprising.
I suspect the reputed steering problems with 100 Corollas out of about 600,000 sold in the US in two years is more likely an operator problem, because my cynical view is that the ratio of moron operators to rational operators is unfortunately very high. Unfortunately, NHTSA and the manufacturers have to deal with idiotic complaints in addition to valid ones.

This one I can understand, as a truck should reasonably be able to hold a small trailer with a jetski on it at a launching dock. What the guy did that caused his truck to be submerged however was idiotic, but it prob wouldn't have happened in the first place if there wasn't a design flaw with the transmission and/or the parking brake.

Try fixing cars for a living at a dealer. Half of the complaints customers have are crap like this.

If the car was in park and the parking pawl snapped, hitting the gas pedal would have done nothing but rev the engine. This person never shifted out of reverse if by hitting the gas the truck accelerated.
