Portland is known for being very walkable and for its cyclists. Sadly a substantial number of both believe they are entitled to do whatever they want because they don't understand that right-of-way does not apply 100% of the time. I decided that I didn't want to be facing a possible manslaughter charge because some hipster riding a fixie with no brakes blew a red light riding the wrong way down a one way and hits my car. Also pedestrians like to just step out in front of you without even looking because...you know...they're in a crosswalk and stuff. And cars can totally stop dead from 35 MPH in six point two inches.
That being said, I decided it was time to invest in a dash cam and my silent little witness went live today. I chose the Mini 0805 due to its reasonable price, good video quality and compact size. I'll post some photos of the install once my add-a-circuit arrives and I can wire it into the fusebox but for now, the power cord is stuffed temporarily into the headliner and behind the glovebox to plug into the power outlet.
Here are two videos I recorded today while out and about. One in late afternoon/early evening and one in full darkness. The time stamp in the first is not accurate and the speed readout is sometimes a little laggy but you also get to listen to my wide tastes in music. Make sure you also view them in YouTube with the highest quality possible.
but still haven't hooked it up. And now that I work from home I really won't get around to it anytime soon. I would like to put it in my wife's car though b/c she does drive quite a bit for work...
Thanks for the vids. I've thought of getting one myself just to catch all the ridiculous sh*t I see out on the road, but I haven't looked into the options yet. So with the one you got, you can hard wire it into your fuse box you said? Does it come with instructions?
i bought one i think it was G1W and it crapped out on me long time ago, cheap chinese POS. i contacted seller, he told me to do software upgrade but it didnt work. im stuck with this crap and im definately not getting another cheap one

It comes with instructions but they are in decently readable Engrish. Basically what I'm going to do is snip the 12V socket end of the connector off and splice the hot wire into the add-a-circuit fuse splice and then ground it to a bolt near the fuse panel. This is what I ordered:
Also I don't plan on posting any close calls or anything like that unless they're super, butt-clenchingly hairy or nasty wrecks. This is basically my own personal insurance plan to keep me from getting taken to the cleaners by morons or potential fraudsters.

We bought it from a site called GearBest and I think it was around $70 with discount. You'll also need a Micro SD card of a certain type but it will support up to 128 GB.

This one got decent reviews so I'm hoping it'll hold up. So far so good.
Well I finally decided to upgrade my dash cam situation. My little Chinese cheap-o was still working fine but I wanted some new features and after a friend's brand new Civic Si got rear-ended in a coffee drive thru, I decided a rear-facing camera would be a sound investment. My research lead me to the new BlackVue DR750S-2CH and while I'd looked at BlackVue cameras before, their woeful nighttime performance was always a turn-off. The new 750 fixes all of that and is, in my opinion, a dash cam that is finally worth considering. Installation took me about two and a half hours from start to finish and that included removing the old camera, the hard, dried-on adhesive mounting pad and the associated wiring and fuse tap.
Settings are accessed via a smartphone app and short-range WiFi that the camera emits. Pretty neat and it works well but my only beef is that the camera has to shut down and reboot after any setting changes. It's a minor annoyance but an annoyance regardless. I'm still perfecting the image settings so I'll throw together a couple clips like last time to demonstrate the image quality. The 60 frames per second is pretty slick, I'll say that.
Nice! I've been rocking a Roav (Anker) dash cam for a few months now and have luckily not needed it. I did get it for a lot of the same reasons as you said though.
I really wish that automakers would allow backup cameras to function as rear facing dash cams though. It's already there, no reason to not use it all the time.
You car is probably a garage queen, but mine isn't and I wouldn't tolerate a 'permanent' exposed dash cam.
You couldn't believe that people will do for $50. Including breaking in your car, causing for $1000 of damages and get that toy. I went through this *twice*.
This is why this time I bought a clip-on visor type, a Papago dash cam.
Not mine:
Suction cups never worked for me. On cold weather they just felt, no matter I cleaned both contact surfaces.
My dash cam caught a car cutting off another and causing a motorcycle to crash. Biker was ok despite no helmet but the police were happy to have a video and they simply thought he wasn't paying attention before the video.

So I have a dash cam in every vehicle. But luckily I have not had to use the video yet.
How did you provide police with the video? Was it on the spot or did you get it to them later? Unless I have a laptop and adapter with me, I don't see how I can watch and/or make copies of the video on the spot. So I'm wondering how I would handle this if necessary. I suppose I could put the microsd in my phone but that's just to play it.

Just recently got 2 Roav C2's for me and the fiance. So far so good, I'm sad that there isn't Wi-fi capability but for the price, I'm okay with it. Haven't needed to extract videos just yet but when I do, it'd need to be after the fact at home on a laptop.

This was something I always thought about as well. I had my work computer so I pulled into a parking lot to look at the video and see what it captured. Once I saw it captured everything, I cut the video and emailed the file to myself via iCloud and went back to the police. I showed them the video on my phone and they asked me to email it to them.

Yeah. 109,000 miles in 6 1/2 years. Total garage queen....Hyundai fucking Elantra. Sounds like you need to stop parking in the hood.
Not all memory cards are created equal for dash cam purposes.
I have personally experienced premature memory card failure with a regular Sandisk Ultra in a dash cam. A quick search online told me Sandisk Ultras are particularly known to fail from the constant write/delete of a looped recorder like a dash cam.
Sandisk will not warranty any regular memory card that fails if used in a dash cam unless it is from their "High Endurance" line. They are usually around $19 for a 32 gb but a few months ago Amazon had a sale that brought them down to $13 and I picked up enough for every dash cam. Just FYI.
Update on the biker - his insurance called me to get a statement and they wanted to blame him it seemed. I gave my statement, stating it was not his fault and asked how he was doing; come to find out, he's paralyzed from the waist down
As for cards Wackjum, I've heard the same so I have "high endurance" but who knows if it helps.

Mine have wifi but I'd probably just pull the card if I needed to get a video off of it.

And this is why I don't have a motorcycle. Not worried about me, worried about all the other idiots on the road.
