Cracked Windshield

Hey guys, need some advice. Was driving home last night on the highway, maybe about 70-75 mph, and I heard a loud crack from the windshield. Think a stone hit it, but I couldn't see a nick or crack, so I didn't think much of it.

Saw it today in the sun. The crack is about half a finger's width, and it seems to be below the surface. There's a sizable piece of the windshield missing that you can feel with your finger, but the crack can't be felt from either inside or outside.

I'll get pics later tonight, but my question is: Do those windshield filler things work? I've seen plenty of television ads for Speedy Glass, I think, where they can fill the crack/nick if it's small enough. Anybody have experience with this? Don't really feel like shelling out the cash for a brand-new windshield.

Will the crack be severely affected by lots of highway driving? My commute is rush hour traffic one-way, and late night free driving the other, will higher speeds spread the crack further?

Thanks in advance.

the cracks?
some.
but the superglue is the same idea as speedyglass or whatever they sell at auto stores.

you just want the crack not to spider.

Check with your insurance company.
For mine if I pay for the 200 or 100 dollar deductible then glass repair like that is free.
I don't think highway driving would affect it much, but the weather sure will.
Being cold outside and turning on you defrost so it's blowing hot air onto the windshield will eventually crack it worse.
I've had a 1 inch crack turn into a 2 foot long crack in a split second on an October morning, cuz it was cold outside and I turned the heater on inside.
Get it looked at/ fixed asap.

Have you called your insurance company?

Your insurance company should replace the windshield. They're pretty quick about it, too. I believe its covered under comprehensive.

whoops, looks like I'm too slow. +1

Yup, just got off the phone with State Farm. If they don't have to replace the windshield, it's free of charge. If replacing is necessary I gotta pay my $300 deductible. Time to start looking for windshield shops. Anybody wanna recommend any chain shops? Maaco?

Yes we do have SafeLite. Are they good?

I just figured chain shops would be the safer bet, but if anybody knows private T.O. shops, that would be great as well

EDIT: The crack isn't really big at all, so I think I'll be repairing the factory glass rather than replacing it. Won't know until I get a pro to look at it, but thanks

I just read that windshield cracks in the driver's line of sight shouldn't be repaired, because it messes with the optics. This crack is smack dab level with my face. Anybody got $300?

I've used Apple Auto Glass for 2 windshield replacements and 1 full car tint removal.
Been very happy with them, but I would assume the experience would differ from place to place
The ones I've used have been 2 different locations in Manitoba

I would stay away from Safelite. They replaced my windshield and the new one has a weird warp at the bottom of the screen and I can hear wind noise when going over 60mph. Next time I'm going to insist on OEM glass installed at Honda, or at least what ever company they use to install their windshields. I would call your local Honda dealer and see who they use and have insurance approve them.

My uncle got a small crack on his windshield (08 Range Rover), so he called his insurance company (Liberty Mutual). They sent a company to fix it (may have been safelite). He didn't like that he could still see the crack, so he complained to the insurance company and they made an appointment for him to take it to Safelite. They replaced the windshield and he has no complaints. (he's usually very picky). All this at no charge.

If you want a good quality glass,

Pilkington, PPG, LOF, and AP Tech.

I have Lamisafe which is the same as AP Tech (LINK)

some auto glass places will pay your deductible too. I used AGP auto glass, they are not in toronto though, before and they did nice work. Maybe start with your dealer for recommended installers

Thanks for the experiences guys. I'll check out that Mississauga location, but it's a bit of a hike, I'm downtown Toronto.

Yeah, I noticed that there are many that will pay your deductible, that could be useful. But isn't it illegal?

Effing impossible to capture. It's the big one:

In case you're wondering, all those other nicks are rock chips also. This one isn't the biggest on the windshield, but it's the only one that's developed into a crack.

Going to head out and get it checked out in person by some pros. The high-end shops use OEM glass, but don't cover your deductible. The cheaper shops have it the other way around

I've got one in the lower corner on the driver side that looks to have gotten a bit bigger...

I personally wouldn't use Safelite, when they replaced the windshield in my Acura three years ago (wow didn't realize that was so long ago...) they cracked it putting it in, then a week later when they replaced the replacement they left glass shards everywhere in my car.

I had a good experience with Safelite, but that was with a broken window as opposed to a windshield. I've heard good things in regard to their glass repair though, that's kind of hard to mess up. Anyway, I hope State Farm will treat you well, good luck.

Thanks, as it turns out, I won't be needing a replacement. They can fill it in and at least stop it from spreading, which is all I really care about.

Got a quote from Apple Auto Glass for $75, and $50 from a downtown shop called Shield Auto Glass, which is the dealer's recommendation. Don't really care about the price, since insurance will be covering it 100%.

Shield mentioned nothing about any type of replacement, so I think I'll be taking it to Apple. Hoping for a good result. Will post pics of the repaired windshield. Thanks for the help
