CPO X5? 2014 refresh
CPO X5? 2014 refresh
Does anyone have one? We are officially in the market to get an SUV early next year (baby due). We use NJ public transpo, so the car would not really move M-Th mostly, and will get ~5k miles/yr. But will be our primary car, paired with a 10 yr old A6 (for emergencies and nanny duty). Therefore, we want to get a CPO with ~30k miles, as a lease doesnt quite make sense. This would be long term ownership, given the lack of miles we would be putting on it.
Does anyone have an X5? Should I be looking at extended warranties? I heard maintenance isnt too bad, minus expensive tires every 10-15k miles (2-3 years for us). Many say the breakeven mileage to offset the cost of an extended warranty is 15k-20k. We would be well under that.
Looking at medium sized SUV, decent brands, and BIG back seats for infant seats. We have boiled it down to the following. (Sorry, not really entertaining other options at this point).
2016 RDX Tech ~28k
Wild card - 2016 Ford Edge Titanium (not sure on long term reliability)
2014 X5 ~37k
2015/2016 XC90 ~40k,Heard these have potential reliability issues...
2018 demo XC60 (if these are around early next year...)

I believe the engine on that one is the N55 turbocharged inline six. That engine is known for being more reliable than its predecessor, the N54, which is what is in my car. My experience having bought a 3-yr old (at the time) CPO BMW has been quite good. The CPO program in place for your year would be the same as mine and it really brought down the cost of ownership quite a bit. I will tell you that I currently have 131k miles on my car and I still love driving it every day. Have I had a couple of expensive repairs post-warranty? Yes. Is the car still worth the effort to me? Yes, very much so.
That's entirely up to you. I've gone without one. Keep in mind that I've been running a tune on my N54 since 50K miles and the two most expensive repairs I've had since my warranty ran out are a water pump and fuel injectors.
I know you're not entertaining other options but if the Edge is on your list, you should really look at the Explorer instead. It's a bit larger than the Edge and has more features and comforts as a result. Also, can carry 7 people in a pinch.
Of what's on your list though, I'd go X5 or RDX though I have a certain hatred for what amounts to a V6 CRV.

If you're only going to have 1 kid, maybe 2 the Edge should be ok. I've owned my Explorer since 2015, although, I'm getting rid of it next year. I've liked it, haven't had any issues, I have a friend with a 2013 and no issues. But you just never know.
I'd take the X5 over one though.

I'd have no qualms with the Edge, though I'd be a bit more partial to the Explorer/Flex for the 3rd row seating.
An Edge Sport with the 2.7EcoBoost would be a hoot, the Titanium limits you to the 2.0EcoBoost.

Man, just sat in the redesigned 2018 outback. The inside is nicer than the RDX, and ford edge titanium for that matter. the 2018 front fascia is a little bit more tolerable. 2018s now come with LED headlights (limited and up), plus apple car play, which are big marks for me.
2.5 awd limited with tech package (8" touch, android auto, apple car play, LED turning headlights, rear cross, eyesight, and all other tech nannies). 30+ MPG on regular, and superior awd. $36k sticker, haggled to $350/mo with a broker, nothing down lease with tax and fees out of pocket. Sounds a lot better than coming $30k out of pocket for a 2016 RDX CPO with a dated nav, etc....I'll only be using half of the allocated lease miles, but it is very tempting...
....and after using apple car play in the dealership, i dont think i could go back. hitting one button on the steering wheel and telling siri to take to me a certain store, etc., is one of the ultimate safety techs when bouncing around the garden state to run errands with an infant. no more fumbling with google maps on the iphone or a not so great factory nav.
As much as i dont really see myself in an outback, everything on paper, and the interior fit and finish, is such an incredible value.
