Corvette meet gone bad...
yea people definately drive WAY crazier at meets, you feel like you gotta keep up with the pack....ive ran through straight red lights, hit 100s on 35s, done insane twolane highway passes, and definately got a little nuts on the curves
you have to admit, the rush is pretty wild though

I'm thinking this car was raced regularly, and the driver made a REALLY stupid mistake trying to showboat.

If he overinflating his tires at sanctioned racing event then he shouldnt tearing to his sidewall. Just an observation...doesn't mean I right.

i went to a meet a few years back w/ a bunch of supras and vipers, etc. Some guy had wrapped his M3 around a turn and then a guy in a stock accord left his car hanging off the side off a cliff

found pics
btw, while the accord crash doesn't look bad, there is about a 500 ft drop on the other end of this guy.
I was about 3 cars behidn the BMW when he went, then while we were making sure he was okay the accord came by.

This is a post from the owner of the purple GTR.
Thanks all, for the kind words and concern. Yes, I was very lucky to walk away without so much as a scratch or bump. The car on the other hand, as you can see in the pics, got a little scratched up!
The thing that keeps rolling through my head is the sight of the guardrail intruding well into the passenger area. I am soooooooooo thankful I had no passenger! This will definitely change my driving habits on future drives (yes, I’ll be back out there soon as soon as it’s repaired or replaced).
This was not a case of driving beyond abilities or conditions. As mentioned earlier, we really were just cruising. The car grossly under-steered through the corner. I take corners MUCH faster than this on a regular basis! It almost didn’t even BEGIN to turn. As best as I can tell, it was attributable to nearly worn out front tires. That, along with the fact that this was literally about the 2nd or 3rd corner of the run – Cold, tires with minimal tread are a bad combination! The real pisser is I had a new set of front rubber in the garage that I had just purchased on E-Bay last week. I knew they were getting bad, but I didn’t realize how bad. My error was one less of driving, and more of maintenance. Either way, I really screwed up!
So my lesson is two-fold out of this -- (1) Don’t try to milk the last few miles out of worn-out tires, and look at ALL wear items more closely and more often, and (2) While I’ve always felt I leave an ample safety margin in my driving and my speed (never push it past about 60% to 70% of the car’s ability or my ability [on the street]), I obviously need to leave a much larger margin of safety for the totally unimaginable. I hope that others might heed my lessons as well, and save themselves the experience I had today.
While it breaks my heart to see the car wrecked like that, it’s just a THING. It can be fixed or replaced. As many have commented, I was VERY lucky that it was only a replaceable material thing that was damaged. The thought of other possibilities will be with me forever!
Thanks again everyone for your concern. Thanks Phil for the LONG ride home! I owe you! Thanks to those on the cruise who all stopped to help. Thanks to the couple (sorry, I didn’t get your names) for making the arrangements with the body shop. And sorry I screwed up a perfectly beautiful cruise on a gorgeous day!
Hey, the insurance adjuster will be looking at the car next week – Did anybody see what happened to that supercharger under the hood? My agent tells me the insurance covers mods as long as they were permanently installed. Yeah, I’m sure I remember a supercharger under there somewhere – Maybe it fell off into the creek!
I’ll see everyone out there again soon. Drive safe!

yeah... I've toned down quite a bit since selling the Supra but for a few years after I got it, we used to have LOTS of meets (and just cruising in general) and do some crazy sheit I won't mention here. It just happens like that - you got 6+ cars together on the highway, it just happens. Luckily we never had any incidents such as this. But there was one occasion where a friend of mine with a white Supra wrecked it while I was following right behind him... kinda traumatic when you see something like that happen right in front of you... luckily he was ok but the Supra wasn't as fortunate.
I think it was crazier in the late 90's when the "import scene" was just starting up - that's the time period I'm talking about. I would like to think that frenzy has settled for now, but I've been "out of the scene" for a while now so I wouldn't know.

All i have to say is that despite what the owner said, he was speeding through the turn.
The section of highway 9 has speed limit of 30 mph. Judging by the damage to the A-pillar, the suspension, he was at least going 50+ when he impacted and judging from no tire track. I think he was probably going to do a power drift through that corner. He said it clearly that he auto-cross the car and front tires are worn. So he was having too much fun and gave it too much gas and the traction on the front broke loose.
I read through all 4 pages on the response on CRF. I am quiet amazed that everyone there was defending him while never acknowledge that they were breaking the law by going too fast for their own good. All were saying that they did not buy the corvette to drive like a pxxxy. I also take offense to comment such as doing 150/160 on san mateo bridge at 2:00AM or 160 on I-280. I am further appalled by that comment that one member made "if you can't find a public to run 150/160 you are not looking hard enough".
I nearly flipped my M3 once in middle on night on I-680 doing 150. There was no car in front or back of me, but i nearly killed myself because of a little tiny bump on the road surface. Since then, I no longer screwed around on public roads. If you are going to spend $$$$$ on your car, at least have the maturity to control it by taking it to track and open it up. I have been challenged many time on public roads in my E55 and M5. I have learned to simply walk away. It's not worth it to risk your life and others just to have couple minute of cheap thrill.
Just dumb.
