The dashcam is commonly used evidence for recording the conversation between driver and officer issuing the ticket. Rarely is the siren utilized for a simple traffic stop such as speeding, and never used while the infraction is being written up.
I mixed it up with overhead lights (and siren). Siren can turn off, but if the overhead lights are still on vehicles equipped with the camera will continue to film.

If police officers have a microphone they have to turn it on.

Again, I would imagine there are several different systems in place, so I can only speak to the ones for my local police department and various departments in Oregon.

And I'm basing this on knowledge that is two years old, so I could be wrong

At least the cop wasn't driving one of these (very common here):

The cop definitely could have driven better there IMO. If he had kept going straight in front of the Galant he would have missed him completely.

As a side note, chasing down a speeder is hardly an emergency warranting the endangerment of other motorists. While the law may say he was not at fault, I believe reckless driving like that should be confined to true "emergency" situations....

Gotta remember...here in Ohio we still have the death penalty for speeding

Funny. Over here, the only real chase allowed at speed is on the expressway. The police will not chase you on the normal roads 10-20 km/h over the posted speed limits. They'll just get your plate number and go to your house. Or have a motorcycle cop go after you. You won't outrun them or Motorola.
