I am in the same boat.
99TL with nearly 180K on the clock.
Just had to replace the power steering hard lines (rusted). Only thing keeping me from junking it is I only have to pay for parts. I think it was $60 in total.
I'll need to have my Teins rebuilt soon ($400) but again that's like 1 car payment on an auto loan.
A $1000 repair bill is a lot less than a car payment spread out over 2, 3, or more years.

I have not done it yet. I am waiting on a call back from the dealer. I am trying to see what they will give me on a trade for the I35. It is unlikely but I figured I would ask.
Here is why I am hesitating on selling the I:
Last month I did brakes so that is one less thing to worry about. And I have started driving line a modified grandfather....ie....I never punch it but I constantly drive 80 mph.
Here is why I am hesitating on selling the I:
- It has a ton of miles, but it still goes. Very reliable 3rd car even with the repairs it needs.
- It has the same condition a lot of VQ35's suffer from.... it drinks oil. As a result of the timing chain tensioner being controlled by oil, the timing chain rattles like crazy. It has for 80K miles. With the way I drive I would need another engine - $2500-$3000.
- Suspension is getting shaky. The car drives great on the highways, still handles great, but I am starting to feel every bump. Figure that would be about $1000. i don't know how to do that one. Oil, brakes, exhaust, fluids and filters are about it for me.
- Will need tires by the end of the year - another $700.

Again, and if you do, doesn't that negate the point of needing something else?
IMO, if you get the TL or something else, just get what you can for the Infiniti (private sale)...someone will be willing to buy it and then it'll be up to them to decide which repairs they will do, if any. I wouldn't go based on the dealer's price for it...it's obviously not going to be the most you can get for it.

Just sell the I to get some money back on your 3G TL purchase.
If your 3rd car is costing you a lot of $$ to repair, it doesn't really make sense.

That list is way too big with those issues, i'd think about dumping it also. How about a 06-08 tsx with better gas mileage but have to use premium?Subaru legacy 07-08? good gas mileage but not too much power.

So if you kept it as a third car, are you still going to put all of that money into the repairs it needs?

I think eventually it will be sold, or donated. Either way.

I looked at the Legacy as well. I am also considering a Sonata but it will have to be newer. Not a big fan of the previous version.

It's a little easier to understand why you want to keep the I35 now. Guess it isn't worth much to anyone but you.
With the amount of highway miles you put on the car, is a 250+ horsepower premium-fueled V6 the right car?
Maybe look at 4-cylinder 87 octane cars with a still decent interior. 2G Mazda6 comes to mind. Loved the interior on the premium models.
Some 6s I think you'd like:
Price is high but mileage is stupid low. Maybe not this exact one, but a similarly optioned one with higher mileage and a lower price might entice you.

And the TL really doesn't get poor mileage overall for a V6.
Also....$24K+Tax is a lot out of my price range right now.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from.
That car was just to show you what they looked like. This is probably up your aisle:

V6 or not, I think you should give the Mazda6 a serious look.

Having a spare car is a bit of a PITA Ravi. You have to drive it or it will pick up more issues. Brakes will seize, tires get flat spots ethanol in the fuel turns gummy. You may find out that it becomes more trouble than it's worth to keep it as a spare.

Think about pa yearly inspections, insurance and normal upkeep. This is one reason we only have three cars and not 4 or 5. Having four with the boxster wasn't bad, but every time i turned around an oil change or set of tires was needed on something.

Plus, when would you really use it for "emergency use". You'll have two sedans. When would you ever say, "Forget the newer car, lets take the Infiniti!" - unless of course, you were just rotating to keep the Infiniti running instead of sitting 24/7. If you got a new(er) car that served a completely different purpose than the Infiniti (ie: an SUV, pick-up, sportscar) then there might be a need to justify when to use one over the other...but you'll have two sedans that basically serve the same need.

+1 on getting the TL
I'll be hitting 100k on my 2004 TL tomorrow and it's been great to me. I suffered from the cracking dashboard and had to pay $550 for a new one. Also for some reason I don't have the best of luck with OEM rotors and pads. On both my 01 CL-S and TL, the rotors warp quickly. I'm an easy going driver so that's frustrating. Besides those two things, the car is awesome. Perfect balance of sport and luxury
Good luck making a decision

To this who are worried about fuel efficiency, I got 30 mpg on the freeway in my 2004 TL regularly. Now that I've driven two gas hogs since (2G RL got 17 in city and 25 on fwy for me, and the V.....don't ask), I kind of miss that.
