Constant Mesh.. Can someone explain?

I understand the basic concepts of a constant mesh setup in a transmission. Normally only manual transmissions are such. However Honda automatics are constant mesh.. what are the pros and cons of such a setup?

Its my understanding Honda did such a thing so it could avoid paying patent fees.
