Considering a 2004-5 BMW 545i sport
Well i've become complacent in my 05 TL and am thinking about trading up to a used BMW 545i 6spd, I'm thinking about doing it probably around august as a graduation present to myself. What do you guys think about this vehicle? Basically I'm looking for something in the 30-35k range with 6spd 280+hp 4 doors and navi, and other suggestions?

just out of curiosity... do you guys get taxed big time, IF suppose you bought a used car in the states? I'm not changing the subject, I'm just wondering... "what if..."
and I haven't been keeping track... what IS the exchange rate lately?

I find myself falling asleep behind the wheel when driving my TSX, but bending over and taking it in the ass on trade keeps me driving it. Not sure if I'd trade up for an older car, but that's me.
I would hang on to it, save your pennies for a year or so and then go find something. But that's me.

I gave a real hard look at that car. They are pretty damn sweet. The interior is real nice. And it pulls like a MOFO. Real smooth. If you are in the market for a Big V8 sedan that car is hard to beat. I like the m45's too, but no 6spd. Plus, i think the 545 looks a lot meaner.
You can find great deals on them.
Go for it.

Buying an american car would also hurt because whatever the trade-in value of my car is say $29,000 I would not have to pay tax on the portion of the new cars cost. So to an american car, i'd have to sell mine privately, take my cash buy the American car, then pay 11 or 12% tax on the whole value. So the savings would have to be pretty substantial for the economics to work out.

I had a 540i and it was a beast considering it was a 4 door Sedan that came out in 97 (mine was a 2000.) If I was in the market for a sedan u will not be able to find a better car in that price range with a 6 speed.

I'm thinking the 530i might be a little under powered for my liking, I think I might try and squeeze in a test drive this weekend. Wheres your brother located? They can be had at or around 50,000km here's an example, although i'm not so hot on these colors.

I thought that would be the case too until I drove one. With 6 gears, it makes do quite nicely kicking down aggressively when you stomp on the loud pedal to make a quick pass. This car gets up and goes and I have the xi version (Touring). The way I figure it is that I have a 350Z for going quick, the 530 is for going fast comfortably.

Wow i did a little digging on importing an E60 from the states, haha that sure as shit won't happen.
haha basically 20%tax +3gs to bmw, and another miscellaneous $500 in fees lol.
BMW's are charged at a duty rate of 6.1% of the stated value of the car, plus 5% federal GST (as of January 1, 2008) and $100 excise tax if the car has an air conditioner in it (regardless if it works or not). A federal excise tax called a 'green levy' is applied to fuel inefficient passenger cars (SUVs, vans, trucks excluded). This vehicle efficiency incentive or more aptly called a disincentive is levied against cars that enter Canada after March 17, 2007. The tax varies from $1000 to $4000 per vehicle based on average fuel consumption figures that exceed 13 L/100 km to over 16 L/100 km. The RIV program charges $207 for each vehicle that enters the program. When a car is provincially registered, provincial sales tax is applied. In Ontario that rate is 8%. Note that some BMWs like the X5, Z3 and Z4 are built in the US and as such no duties are applied.
BMW Canada began charging $500 per vehicle for supplying recall clearance letters for imported vehicles coming from the USA, as of June 2, 2007. Previously there was no charge for this service.
BMW Canada began charging an additional $350 per vehicle for supplying letters of admissibility for imported vehicles coming from the USA, as of November 26, 2007. This is over and above the cost of a recall clearance letter. Previously nearly all BMWs were admissible for import from the USA, and no such letters were ever required. BMW has also convinced Transport Canada and the Registrar of Imported Vehicles that day time running lights (DRLs) found on US spec. BMWs do not meet Canadian DRL requirements. As such BMW Canada has mandated that only a Canadian BMW dealer can reprogram US BMWs to meet Canadian specs. In most cases late model BMWs will also require the installation of a Canadian instrument cluster and in some cases will require an HVAC control unit (e60 5 series and e63 6 series) to meet these Canadian DRL requirements. Expect to pay your local BMW dealer ~$400 to program, ~$1400 for a cluster, and ~$1000 for an HVAC control unit.

Chief if you mean the old 5-series (E39) those are pimp! Shame that they more manufacturers don't offer a manual in a large sedan. Looks way better than the E60 IMO, even now.

I would rather have a new 335i over a used 545i. If you can swing high 30s you can get a 335i with just the sports pack. If not im sure you can get one with less then 10k miles for high 30s

If this helps I probably won't be pulling the trigger till july/august as this will be a bit of a grad present to myself. Who knows the 09TL could come out and be a looker with killer features.

M45 is alright, but there is no 6SPD which is a big thing for me I really like driving MT and don't think i'm ready to give that up just yet, which somewhat limits my options to basically Audi or BMW, or maybe wait and see what acura does to the 09 TL.

Do these things really depreciate this fast or must there be something wrong with it?

I have spent some drive time in both ^^ and the 550i. Both were a blast to drive, despite being automatic. I got the 545i up to about 110mph on Roosevelt Ave in Queens during one BMW event and the 550i up to the same speed on a back road in West Windsor, NJ at another event. The E60 has a remarkable chassis.

I do not disagree with 03CLspunisher often but I would rather have a used 545i than the 335i. (Then again, if one has the means then they could have the best of both worlds with a 535i.

They do depreciate that much...the better it is for people who couldn't pay the price when new...
