cobalt SS

I was just messing around looking at cars the other day, looking for somthing to commute in. I've put 30k in 9 months on my TL and would like to keep the miles down. I found a 06 SS with 42k for 11500. Just wondering if anyone has ever owned one, it seems like a fun car to drive?

Thanks. I've always wondered about those cars. I saw one at the track a while back, still had the dealer tag on it. It was running 14.1's bone stock. I think it would be a fun little car to own and just beat the shit out of. Do i need it, no of course not, but my job is 50miles each way, my GF's is 70 each way, and i travel back to indiana often which is 600 each way. So needless to say i just want a car that beat for a while, but still have fun in! thanks

That's a pretty expensive car to beat on ($11K) I just bought a Saab 9000 turbo for $1500, that's something you can kill lol. After a few upgrades that POS will be running faster then my TL Why do you want to spend so much?

If the sole purpose is to keep miles off the TL I don't think it's a wise move. This car is going to continue to depreciate, in particular as the miles rack up on it, not to mention you are almost guaranteed it needing more maintenance. The TL is going to be more comfortable and if I were putting that many miles on a car I'd want to ensure my comfort, buzzing about in a Cobalt SS may grow tiresome quickly. On the other hand if you are just looking for an excuse to buy another car I see no problem with it, but if you are purchasing it to save money or help the TL retain value it's not going to be successful.

I don't know what I would buy for around $10k to put a ton of miles on, but I know it wouldn't be a Cobalt, I would probably go with a Corolla or Civic, cheap, reliable and proven - it's a hard to beat combo.

One of the guys here is on his second. He really likes it. He didn't have to really spend any money on maintaining it. He traded in the last one at about 90K for the one he has now and didn't really have anything wrong with the old one.

Honestly, I think you should look at something other than that Cobalt.

You can find some good cars in the $6-8k range that you can beat on for a long time. You might even get lucky and find a 2004 Mazda3s 5dr for under $10k. It's going to have 70-80k on it but you'll get a very good car that should last you 200-300k miles.

I traded my TL for my 07 ss/sc cobalt, it's a really fun car to drive. Really easy to modify and updrades are rather cheap compared to the TL. With 42k it's out of warranty, and most used ones are beat on, so inspect it over pretty good. Check for loud rattling noises in the supercharger, check the intercooler pump as they are always going out, and check out the stock cat because they fail a lot. Is it an ss supercharged you are looking at or the ss 2.4? Keep in mind there are two versions. One of the first things I did with mine was go wingless, I hate the damn high rise GM slapped on there.

Look at the supercharger pulley too, if it has blue bolts on it, it most likely has the GM stage 2 upgrade which makes the car around 230whp and easy to get low 14s. As far as gas mileage goes, stock you will get low/mid 30's on the highway. I get upper 30's because I have an awesome tune on it.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions, also check out cobaltss.net.

you're right about everything except the maintenence. The cobalt has proven itself to be a reliable little car. Best of all the SS in SC or TC can be had for cheap reliable power. The ecotec motor is a beast and has proven itself to be very reliable and stable.

looks pretty well taken care of, seems like a good pick up! One small thing though is that it doesn't have LSD, but unless you plan on autocrossing that doesn't really matter.
