Civic or Mazda3

I need to buy a "new" ride.

I need something reliable, very cheap on gas (at least 30 city mpg), with 4 doors. Used is fine as long as it is under warranty. I also want something that is EASY to work on with unlimited aftermarket support. $16K is my absolute total complete LIMIT!

I found a fully loaded (leather, HIDs, Navi, etc.) Mazda3 for $16K, but I am thinking I might want to go along the civic lines instead.

Thanks for the input!

I'd have to test drive em first, cause how the cars ride/accelerate would be the deal maker. I like the traditional interior layout of the mazda better than what honda tried to do inside. Exterior wise I could be happy with either. I also like how hids are available on the Mazda.

Fully loaded 3 though. I really like the looks of that car and drives really well.

Both good cars, I would go with the best deal

That is a nice deal on the 3, but I hate how the 3 looks tiny from the outside. I love the look of the new Civics so I'd rather go with that.

@ <$16K I would not be getting a new civic. By $16K I mean otd price.

It would have to be an older (ie 03 and above) Civic EX.

3 may look tiny on the outside, but its huge on the inside.

if its not going to be the new SI, i'd say go w/the 3. that thing is gorgeous.

oh damn. if its one of the old gen civics, you'd better damn well get the 3. it blows the old civ's out of the water.

In that case, get the Mazda. The old Civic's can't compare IMO.

The new Civic sedan is nice but it doesn't have anything over the Mazda3 IMO. Plus the Mazda3 is built in Japan and has a longer warranty.

EDIT: I thought you were comparing the 3 to the new Civic. If you're looking at the older Civic's then it's a no brainier definitely get the 3.

test drove a 06 coupe EX - i was really surprised by the quality and refinement as well as the smooth revving k-series engine.

edit: mazda 3 is miles ahead of the last gen civic. my vote = 3

I agree, except on the K-series engine thing. It's an R-series engine!

I drove an LX coupe from 06 and it was really nice. The old civics are kinda not great, but they're WAY better on gas than the 3. Like 30% in real life driving. I know cause my brother has a 1.7EL, which has the same 127hp engine as the last gen Civic, and he's getting 7.2 L/100km in the city (measured from the gas station fillup to full). The 3 that my neighbor has gets about 9.8 or 10L/100km in the city. The 3 is a lot faster, but it depends what you want it for.

i have a mazda 3 hatch fully loaded. if you want unlimited aftermarket, go with civic. they dont have that much stuff for the 3 in the performance category. only intake and some exhaust company i never heard of. only one i herd of is borla and magnaflow.
no one make street legal headers cuz they have 2 catalytic converter. on the one exhaust pipes and the other that is engraved to the headers so no other company make one that is street legal.

I hate to say it but I'd take a Mazda3 over the last gen Civic. But if you're in that price range, why not look at a Scion? (Maybe I'm saying this because there is no Scion in Canada ... ... but we do have a Smart car ... haha -- what a sad looking car)

Thanks for that input.

The main thing that makes me shy away from the MZ3 is the availability of parts. In 4 or 5 years when I have to start fixing on it I don't want to have to search and pay an arm and a leg for parts for it. With the civic I would not have that problem.

But the civic doesn't have navi, leather, and hid's for $16K like the MZ3 I found...

I can't get a fully loaded new civic for $16K. Even if I could I HATE BUYING NEW CARS. I hate dealerships, I hate their salesmen, and most of all I hate driving off of a lot and losing $2K to $4K immediately. If this were Dec. '06 I would be definitely be looking at getting a slightly used '06 Civic fully loaded for under $18K

No Scion:
Need 4 Doors, something that doesn't look like a fallen fridge, and something bigger than my thumb.

I agree with you on the dealerships. When I bought my wife's MDX, I did all negotiations via fax. I wrote all the specs and faxed all the dealers in the DFW area. I made them compete against each other. Saved almost $5K and the dealer even threw in the all-season mats and cargo liner. When I picked up the MDX, I was in and out in 30 minutes. Of course, they still tried to sell me stuff but said no to all other offers. Hope this helps. Goodluck!
