choosing new rides!

OK, so my wife and I have come up with two options to replace my 2000 TL. We are going with either a TSX or an X-type (provided we can find a manual tranny with navi). Obviously we know about all the greatness and value the TSX offers, but does anyone know how reliable x-types are? I see them everywhere so that makes me believe that there tends to not be too many serious issues..

I would say the TSX. I'm not a fan of the Jag. Plus I'm not sure the X type comes with a manual tranny.

I've heard nothing but bad things about the Jag, actually. I think some magazine did a long term test when it came out and the maintenance was unacceptable.

I just made the jump from a 2000 TL to an '04 TSX, I couldn't be happier.

Yeah, the x-type comes in auto and manual...2.5 or 3 liter...the manual usually comes with the base model though, the 3.0 sport usually has manual, navi, xenons, sunroof, etc.

What are the bad things you've heard? So far, most things I've read are all little problems, like rattles, creaking trim, etc. Deity, did you get a new one in 04 or did you find it used?

I just looked up the X-Type and I didn't see any mention of an available manual tranny for either the sedan or the sportwagon.

We briefly looked into an X-Type, but having known several people with Jags, plus the fact that the car is never recomended by any magazine b/c it's known for being very unreliable... I'd say TSX is the clear winner here.

I LOVE any type of Jaguar product, but between the two choices you mentioned I would probably choose the TSX. And as much as I hate to admit it, the X-type depreciates quite noticeably.

Best place for me was ebaymotors. There's a slew of them with manuals, but you usually only find them with the base model ie. no xenons, no sunroof, no navi, no power...etc. From what I have seen, they are available from 2002 and up.

Looks like the TSX may be the winner here hands down, but diverdown, what do you know about the X-type's reliability? Have you owned one before? Any common complaints?

As far as the depreciation, we were gonna get a used one. We've seen quite a few here and there between 12k-19k with fairly low miles (30k or less)...but obviously the TSX holds a lot more since we can't seem to find one under 20k.

I never liked the x-type at all, always seemed to me like the cheap Jaguar kinda like what Cadillac did with the Catera. I've sat in it before at auto shows and I think it looks a bit dated stylishly and hardly has any rear legroom. Just my

to be honest, i wouldn't consider either car. neither one really excites me or has anything special about to offer. the jag, like other mentioned, is just a glorified ford mondeo but then again, the tsx is just a glorified honda. one thing that always bothered me about the x-type though was the INCREDIBLE lack of cabin room. the backseats, even with the front seats pushed forward, offer about as much room as most coupes do and even then the front seats are useless because nobody's legs could fit there. i've driven the tsx and i just wasn't impressed. it wasn't a bad car, but it wasn't a good car either. i just got a sense of cheapness while driving it and the attention to detail just wasn't what the jag offered. the wood was fake, the interior was plastic, and even when floored, the car seemed to just stand still, i was very disappointed in that department.

i guess it comes down to how much your budget is. either way, good luck!

I have an 04 TSX, and the one complaint that i would NEVER have is about the interior. Acura nailed that interior, at least black with titanium trim, and navi, IMO.

Well, we have 32k to work with in liquid, but we are trying to keep it under 20k and keep the rest for repairs, etc. Tough with either...I may just look at a used 04+TL, but I wanna test drive one first. Anyone here drive a TL stick vs. a TSX stick? I've heard the TL takes some getting used to...

I have driven the TSX as a loaner in stick, and it was awesome...is it similar to the TL? Seems like some 04-05's are available for 24k or less

I totally agree. I love the interior in my 04 TSX. It's far better than any car I've had in the past.

I also have a certified used 04 and I love it. I bought it in May 2005 with 16k miles on it for $23,500.

Automatic/no navi, 40K miles, certified - $20.5K

I don't think that's a "great" deal, but the problem I had was '04 TSXs were flying off the dealer's lots. Therefore they really didn't want to hagle with me at all. Normally I would have waited up to a few months in order for a good deal to come along - but I had totaled my TL and I just had to get into a new car as soon as I could.

All of the '04 auto/no navis I saw in the area were going for around $21K internet asking price. On the lot they were stickered close to $23K.

One dealer had a silver on black 6 speed/no navi, and the first price he offered right off the bat was $18.5. I suppose the manuals are hard to get rid of. I was thinking long and hard about that one, but in the end I decided I needed an auto for my commute, and SSM TSXs are pretty common here.

As far as how the TSX compares to my old 2000 TL - they're pretty different cars. The TSX has a lot more sport to it. The seats are firmer and hold you better, the handling is a lot more sharp. Most of the major features are the same. The big improvements for me have been a 6 disc in dash changer, dual climate control, and HID projectors (not reflectors). The backseat is a lot smaller (no big deal for me) but certainly still useful for adults. The engine feels more peppy around town, I'm not missing the 25 or so extra horsepower I had in the TL. It's a different car, but I'm really enjoying the change.

with 20k, i'd jump up from an x-type to a used 03-04 s-type. those cars are absolutely gorgeous with the engine to back it up and an interior that's lightyears ahead of the tsx and tl. manual transmission was available on the s-type starting in '03 but it was only offered on the 3.0 model. is there a certain reason you're only looking at manuals or is it just your driving preference?

Deity, so there's not much of a difference between your 2000 tl and the TSX? (I have a 2000 tl too, but am worried that the TSX will feel too sluggish...) I didn't want to drop too much on mods to get the feel of the tl's power again.

daemonicus, So far, the only manual tranny s types i have seen are all base models. I'm looking at manuals because my wife's G35 is manual and I really miss it. Even though we switch off, she's very protective of it (I would be too!) so I have to go find my own manual car. S-type maybe if I can find one with what I want. It's gotta have navi, xenons, stick, and a sunroof. Those are the must haves...steering wheel controls would be nice, heads-up, power everything...i do have to say, I like the Jag key fob much better than the acur ones (although the new switchblades are hot)

Nope, so far so good. One fairly common issue is with the headunit lights going out. It seems to only happen on 04s. Mine flickered for a couple minutes earlier this month, but did not go out completely. There's a couple threads about it in the TSX section if you want to read up on it. Seems most if not all people are getting them replaced while under warranty. Out of warranty, it's up to the dealer's discretion.

Well, it's an Acura, so it will feel familiar, but driving it is quite different. IMHO, the TL felt like the perfect grand tourer, that car was made to hit the highway. The TSX is more like a go-kart, with more emphasis on handling.

It's been pooring rain since I took delivery of the car, and all I've done so far is commute with it on 40 mph streets. I haven't really had a chance to stomp on it and see what it can do. For me, being mostly a city driver, the four cylinder is perfect (probably better than the 3.2 6 in the TL). Acceleration is really smooth and it pushes around the corners wonderfully. This weekend I'm going to drop in the K&N and take her out to the suburbs, I'll see what she can do then.

When I had a TSX as a loaner last year, I got it on the freeway and it lacked the "omph" when you put the pedal down that the TL had. But otherwise it was enough. Also keep in mind I've got the automatic, when you probably want the manual.

deity, you'll have to let me know what you think of the K&N. It'll be ncie to have a gas sipping 4 banger again though...

synth, so far the x-types i've been seeing with the options I want are anywhere between 14.5k for about 25k miles and 22k for about 10k or less on the odometer. (this is for 2002-2005) and the tsx's i've been seeing are about 19.5-28, but none of which have the navi/manual combo...I guess all the enthusiasts here picked em up before I even started looking!

Not jersey, I wouldn't mind anywhere in the tristate area, but depending on the deal, I'll go as far as the central time zone. I've bought every car i've ever owned off of ebay or somewhere online. Matter of fact, I bought my current 00 tl from a dealership off lease in Rhode Island and drove it back (I regret not getting the navi btw, which is why it is a must for my next wheels)

I found one for you, it's in Maryland. Manual + navi. Imageshack isn't cooperating right now - I was trying to post a screenshot to show you but it keeps making it tiny. Anyway, go to www.acura.com to the pre-owned section and do a search. There's a 2004 MT/nav silver/ebony with 41k miles on it for $22k in Gaithersburg, MD. I'd try to negotiate even lower than that - I bet you can get it for less.

VIN: JH4CL95944C031450

Also just found this one at Acura of Ocean (where I got mine). It's a 2005.

Sorry, i've never owned one and don't know anyone that has owned one.

Personal note, I've always liked the look of the x-type.

When i looked up the x-type, it was on the jaguar website. I wonder why they don't mention anything about the manual version on there? perhaps it's not available on '07 models?

maybe not, but there are deinfitely manuals out there. They are kina fun to drive, it's 60/40 AWD favoring the rear, so AWD with a rear feel...kinda cool. But if you wanna see manual ones, go to ebaymotors, as there are always a few. They are almost always base model though, every so often I see a sport edition with all the bells and whistles.

btw, if ANYONE knows of a place that is selling a BLACK TSX with navi/stick, let me know!

but that one has no navi! navi is a must for me now...I've suffered too much looking at everyone's acuras with navi. a tl or tsx without navi looks like there's something horribly missing from the dash...

Are you sure? On Acura's site it says it has navi.

From Acura of Ocean's site:
