My youngest son is 21. He's been dreaming of this day since the USDM STi came out when he was 11. He spent years and drove hundreds of miles looking at STis: Fokker wings, no wings, wavy fenders, curbed, practically square wheels, mystery wires...and of course the ubiquitous K&N.
This weekend he found a totally stock, showroom cherry 2005 STi and jumped on it. It had belonged to a well-heeled guy as part of his fleet of toys, and has all of 39k miles:
Granny drove it to church on Sunday......39000 miles:
All 4 BBS are this clean:
Look ma, a stock intake! (For those who have never seen one.)
Groovy blue alcantara:
My older son's S2k in the background:
Of course, he's planning an intake, an exhaust, and eventually suspension.
Don't let him do any crazy mods and turn it into every other crappy STi he turned down!

Haha He grew up in the right seat of a lightly-modded C5, but Dad's influence only goes so far.
This one is coming at a good time. When he was 17 we modded out his Jetta VR6. Lots of good father/son times in the garage. But then it got so even he couldn't tolerate the jarring ride and noise.
Then at 19, he toned it down a bit and we put an Invidia N1 on his WRX. Better. Even Mom would occasionally ride in it.
I'm pretty sure he'll be a lot more cautious with mods now. And this is why:

Curious what did he end up paying for it?
Much more than Edmunds or NADA and about 1.5k more than KBB. The dude knew what he was selling and Eric knew it was the best he would ever see. Now, for the 1st time he has payments, with about half of it financed.
An exotic car dealer once told me: "Every car is a hunk of junk. Never fall in love."
Want one. Wife says no. Want out of TSX. First world problems.
I have the opposite problem. After I dumped my 2011 Mazdaspeed3, went hybrid Lexus. Dumped it for TSX wagon. I was shopping, and really looked at the 2015 WRX. Wife wouldn't let me buy WRX< she said STi or don't even bother. So since current STi still has old motor with ringland issues, I don't want one. Maybe if they update the STi with a new motor, I will definitely get one.
As you said first world problems... I couldn't see paying 32K for a wrx....with the options I wanted (HID/Moonroof)

My old landlord told me the same thing...he always has new toys as he's a tow truck company owner, he told me, if the money is right...he buys...and if the money is right...he sells. Never fall in love.
Too late with the TL
Great job, man...I remember seeing those around campus in college...I wanted one so badly. I still think they look better than most of the new ones.

So he went through all that trouble avoiding crapped out examples, just so he could screw one up personally?
As a past owner of an '04 STi (bought new), I congratulate your son. I had mine for almost 10 years until I got my TL and I only sold it because I have foot problems and the stick was getting hard to drive. I always got a smile on my face when I drove it! Some may say a 21 year old doesn't need a STi but you know your kid and hopefully this will be a good decision for him. My son got a MR2 as his first car when he was 16 and he both drove it well (never a ticket even 16 years later) and treated it well.
