Cat converter cleaner question

Hi guys my wifes 98 corolla thru a CEL recently and I went to autozone to get the code ran and it came back as a clogged Cat. The cars has 164k on it and runs great, but fuel economy has been on the decline lately. I assume it was an O2 sensor but a clogged cat makes a lot of sense. I will definitely not be buying an OEM replacement, probably go cheap and have a universal magnaflow welded on. My question is before I buy and pay for a new cat to be installed I wanted to see if there are any good catalytic converter cleaners out there that I can try first. Would a good fuel system cleaner like BG44K or Gumout Regane help or are there specific converter cleaners out there? Would seafoam or Amsoil Power Foam work?

Sorry, i cant help you more. Most of the time people will either replace the O2 sensor or just replace the cat.

Or just dont run a catalytic converter

I'd just get an aftermarket cat and not even worry about a cleaner. You can probably find a state approved obd2 one for under 100 dollars.

dont wast your time on cleaners. Just hit your local auto parts or muffler shop and tell them you want the cheapest car. Or hit a local junkyard up.

well on my way to work the other day. I took my wifes car as I was going to have a new cat installed, just a universal cheapo weld-on cat and the cheapest price I could find was $220.00 installed. As soon as I gunned it a few times the CEL went off and hasn't come back on. The car ran great, accelerated very well and I don't want to spend 220.00 on a new cat if I don't have to. There is a slight exhaust smell while driving sometimes. I really want to try a cleaner before getting a new Cat. Will seafoam help clean the cat or make it dirtier? any other cleaners I can buy OTC that work?

The term "clogged" just means it's not flowing enough exhaust. It could be that your engine was running to rich/lean because of bad O2 sensors and now your cat is melted inside.

In any event, you can't clean a clogged cat. Just get a new one - and make sure to replace the O2 sensors as well while you're at it.
