Carputing, love it or hate it?

I was just looking at some of the stuff on mp3car.com and thought I'd find out what you guys thought of it.

There's some pretty cool stuff available.

hmm...well if you want opinions on carputers...

i think they're pretty cool, but i doubt i would ever use it to its full potential. I think if you have an "all in one" DVD/Nav system, and an Ipod....you're pretty much set. And thats only if you really do a lot highway driving. i cant see using it on the city roads too much to be honest.

its popular that everyone knows it, but IMO its not that great. yeah you can get gps blah blah blah. we have iphones now seriously. go online to check simple things and manage simple tasks works perfect IMO.

takes too long to boot, if u drive for five minutes from A to B u have no music for 2 minutes....

i saw someone get a macmini and hook it up as a video input for their navi.

Nah, it's fine... it's just a little slow on the CL forums sometimes...

You'll get a better response from the folks over in the cartalk forum...

i have had a carputer in my 1G for about 4 yrs now... and to be honest it is great at first... there are many non car enthusiasts that have never even thought of having a computer in your car... but it does make sense... it is basically an all in one that is a bit cheaper than a Pioneer unit that can do the same thing... it holds all my MP3s, vid clips, navigation, sat radio, and bluetooth...

but times have changed and now many cars that come with all these things OEM will slowly eliminate the need for something like this (bluetooth, NAVI, USB radio, etc)... i have begun to use it less and less nowadays and only really turn it on when i need the navi...

so unless you have a 10 sec track car that you can directly use the carputer to monitor the engine settings, not really DD practical... or maybe im just getting old...

i personally think now a days carputers are overrated and can't do much more than your double din systems from pioneer and alpine.

i still want one though but i will also be running a deck so i only use it when i actually have to and the rest of the time i can just listen to the deck.

imho, ive had a carputer set up and its not worth it. Getting it to look stock is expensive, getting decent hardware is expensive, and they are way too sensitive for a car application. Id stick to one of those all in one dvd/nav/media thingys...

I'm a major tech dork. But an iPod in my glovebox and a Blackberry in my shirt pocket are more than enough for me.

After all, I like to DRIVE my car.

I suppose if I were some sort of a VIP it would be cool, but then I'd be in the backseat with a laptop
