car audio question

ok guys

i have an amp powering 2 6'9 rear speakers....

Now i am driving, and BOTH speakers in the rear stopped working..completely...

and the AMP light is not on anymore either...

Can anyone tell me what happened?

Did I blow anything, what is the worst case scenario?

Does it matter that i something metal in the trunk that MAY have touched the amp?

help please..thanks guys

Do you have a fuse that may have blown somewhere along the power relay to the amp?

There should be two fuses. One under the hood in the wire running from the battery to the amp, and one on the amp itself. Check both. Hold them up to the light and if there is no connection between the two sides, the fuse is blown.

This is the fuse that should be in your amp (maybe a different color):

The fuse that is under the hood most likely looks like this one:

if the fuses are ok, then either the power or ground wire to the amp have come loose somewhere....the one other thing it could be is the remote wire from the deck to the amp telling it to turn on, has come off....

Cool!

But you're not out of the woods yet.

You'll want to find out why you're blowing the fuses in the first place. This could be an indicator that all is not well with your install.

yeah but amir, you're prolly blowing fuses because there is a short somewhere....there is a wire touching something it shouldn't...if you run your amp under high loads, and there is a wire arcing somewhere...it could cause a fire....

I would say that if he has the same problem again really soon, then he should have someone look at it (the installers), but fuses go out sometimes.

astro..haha, funny story here...

i used to have 2 12" kickers in the trunk...and..i needed trunk space, so i took all the subs out, with the amp..i left the wires in the trunk loose, without tape...and nothing happened for a month of driving like that..but then, one day, smoke started filling up the car, from what seemed like under the steering wheel..hahaha, me i watch too many movies, so thinking the car is gonna blow up into flames, i pulled over and RAN OUT OF THE CAR in the middle of highway 7!!..haha cars were honking at me and everythin!..turns out u need to put tape on the end of those amp wires!!

sids idea sounds good..the amp is 2 years old...so i will just replace the fuse this time, but if it happens again in the following 6 months, i;'l take it to the shop...

Be very carefull. One of the most commeon reason for blown fuses is a faulty ground. IF your ground is bad you can create something called a "positive ground" which causes burst of positive 12+ energy to run through the entire vehicle (which is acting like a ground). By doing this it may cause other random things that are grounded to blow fuses too. Make sure to check things out.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the fuse is not really the problem; it's more of a symptom. This little fuse gave it's life to send you it's message of warning. You could replace it and MAYBE the worst that will happen is that it will blow again sooner or later.

As others have pointed out though, when you have shorts or a faulty ground an amazing number of weird and expensive problems can occur.

The more weirdness that occurs the harder it is for someone to troubleshoot. If the car's electrical system is affected by a problematic aftermarket install, then you will also have to pay an Acura dealer to investigate that problem first. This can easily turn into a nightmare costing you big money and lots of time while some dealer's mechanic is scratching his head alot.

It would probably be wise to attempt to locate a really good installer to take a look at your wiring harness sometime soon.

The percentage of installers who do not understand electricity (or cars) is pretty high so some investigation is warranted. These people do not usually come cheap, but they save you money in the long run and build better sounding systems.

Even if your pro just cleans up the wiring and doesn't determine the original problem, at least you shouldn't have to worry about car fires, electronic gremlins or being stranded somewhere --without tunes!

just make sure you put a the same rating fuse or lower on the amp, and put a lower one in the inline fuse holder at the battery and you should be ok. i agree that blowing fuses isn't too good of a thing, but then again if you play your sound hard, you can blow the fuses pretty easy. i had 3 10" fosgate subs in my 99 civic and i used to blow my 70 amp fuse all the time when i turned it up (for that nice vibration on your back!!) so its not too big a deal..
Take Care Amir
