(Canadian) Insurance Question!
So Im saving up for an Acura, but its taking me a long time to save cause Im paying 150 for insurance a month
which isnt too bad...but thats $1800 that I could save in a year.
I was wondering how the "occasional driver" works with insurance. because right now Im a secondary driver and my dad is primary on the car, so the car is under his name and it will still be insured.
I asked a friend of mine at work, he said that he was talking to a police officer about it... for example if he had to take his moms/dads car out for whatever reason and gets pulled over, as long as the car is insured its ok? (He said the police officer told him as long as the insurance slip is there, the police cant/wont do anything about insurance)
He told me the only real risk with being an occasional driver is incase you get into an accident you'll be screwed with your insurance company.... but nowadays with the way insurance is such BS, noone really does anything through insurance.... I would rather pay the dude $1000 for the damage repairs than have my insurance sky rocket to $200-250 a month for three years (for a total of $1800-3600 extra).
What I really wanna find out (without asking my insurance company and possibly leading them on) is how the "occasional driver" thing works.... Do I still have to pay? Or is it more like since the car is under my dads name, I just take myself off of the Secondary driver position and become an occasional driver just like that? I mean... I only drive the car to and from work and occasionally to see my girlfriend. My friend also told me that most insurance companies call BS on the whole occasional driver act.... So it goes through insurance? meaning I have to sign up to be an occasional driver?
I may have missed some things... Sorry if this is confusing... I really dont know what Im talking about. I have absolutely no idea how it works

I'm not sure about the main question there, but as for the other part about getting screwed by your insurance company by being an "occasional driver", that's not generally a problem when you're talking about a $1000 accident, it's more a problem when you crash and kill someone or your insurance company has to cover somebody elses hospital bills I believe. When they have to pay out big like that they'll do a lot of investigation into stuff to find a way not to pay from what I understand.
I'd suggest you call your insurance company and ask how it all works anonymously. Don't give them your account number or anything, just ask as if you're looking to sign up with them and want information on how things work.

Here is some info for you.If there is only one car in the household then there has to be one principal driver and the other drivers will be secondary or occasional. If there is an equal number of cars as there is licenced drivers then each driver will be listed on a car as principal,in which case your premiums will go up significantly.
The most important thing to consider is not if you get involved in a fender bender but if the is a serious collision and someone gets hurt or killed, without insurance then you can find yourself and your dad in a lawsuit with significant costs.
Insurance companies are more concerned about personal injuries than damage to vehicles.Protect yourself and your dad.
