C&D November 08: Lightning Lap

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...p_2008_feature

I can't find the final results online but lets just say the Cobalt SS is the best bang for the buck, possibly ever.

Off the top of my head, its quicker than the Evo, S2000 CR, Mugen Si, S5, IS-F, STi, G37, 135, SRT8, R32, Elise SC and SRT4.

It's not quicker than ANY of those. 5.7 0-60 for cobalt ss.

You should really read OP articles before you attempt to post.

I can't seem to find the actual article, but the Cobalt did 8:22 at the 'ring. It set a record for FWD vehicles.

Dom, the results chart is actually located near the bottom of the page, direct link is here:

http://www.caranddriver.com/content/...08+Results.pdf

The Cobalt SS is very fast, faster than EVO X. That shouldn't be a surprise though as the Cobalt SS has lapped the ring in 8:22. I believe that's just 2 seconds behind the new Camaro SS with over 400hp. I would love to see a race between the Cobalt SS and the JDM FD2 Civic Type R.

OMG but it's not a BMW or RWD so how can this be a real car?

I'm very impressed with what Chevy has done with this car. Just not a fan of the way it looks. When I first read about it they said it's just as good if not better than the ITR.

Gotta give credit where its due. The Cobalt is a very good FWD track car but I still couldn't rock one. I've hated the Cobalt since it came out....

Well done Chevy. Now, give me an interior with a little less plastic...

Great car, but even though it won the latest R&T shootout, they still have issues with the interior, as do I. I would love to see a Honda/VW style interior on this car, with good panel gaps, nice soft textures, etc.

Then, give it AWD and really start having fun at the Evo/STi's expense.

GM's coming out swinging...the Cobalt SS first in LL1, and the Z51 and CTS-V first and second, respectively, in LL2. Nice.

As fast as the Cobalt SS is around a track and as low as the entry fee is, I still don't really like it. It doesn't look bad or anything, its just strange when a car purpose-built for economy is turned into an all-out track car. I'm all about bang-for-your-buck performance, but it doesn't get my heart beating faster.

and I don't see what's wrong with the GT-R's time? The article said it beat the Z06's previous time by over 2 seconds when equipped with the high-performance Dunlops. Then again the Z06's stock runflats aren't exactly great track tires to begin with.

The biggest surprises for me were the Elise, S5 and the STi. WTF?

Not a Cobalt fan by any stretch of the imagination but they deserve kudos for making a car that quick for 24K.

New STi is a dog. The 09 WRX with its upgrades gives it a run for its money. Sad.

Yah my mistake. Just looked up the nurburgring times and saw that the viper is the record holder at 7 seconds below the GT-R.. makes sense now

Wish it cost about $10k less.

Oh well, that's what 2-3 year old lease returns are for.

That's the EP3 Civic Type R which is quite slow and is only as fast as a WRX.

My point would be this ... Since I'm not going to track my DD I don't care that the Cobalt SS is faster than other cars in its class around a track.

I'd rather have a Mazdaspeed3 or GTI even though they are both slower. They are simply better cars overall.

S5 needs to be improved significantly in terms of performance. I mean it's frigging overpriced with the current performance numbers, IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea that GM is actually producing products that sell. The Vette has a nice history, the Cadillac is a good car that does not require an AARP membership, and Saturn is doing it smartly and taking everything Opel has to offer and selling it. The Cobalt is a start, like the Malibu, but not my cup of tea.

I'll take an R32 over the Cobalt. Yeah, it cost a bit more, but at least it does not have the rental car interior / exterior. Hell, the C30 might have done better if it was set up for track use.

wow, thats a lot of performance for that $$. with that price tag, that's not a bad idea for a weekend car to keep around for pure enjoyment. it's like getting a road legal go-kart with a radio and A/C.

It'll still sell really well because it's hot, and because most of the people buying it will only ever lap the local 'kiss and ride' at their kids school. But ya, I agree.
