Is buying carfax unlimited worth it?

as you guys may know, I have been looking for a Acura TL Type S for the last 2 months and I finally found one from a private party. I want to carfax it before I buy it but the prices are crazy. 20 for 1, 30 for 10, or 40 for unlimited. It would seem like the 40 is the best deal. Does anyone have it and was it worth it?

Use Autocheck, it's less expensive.

I've always done it and its always been worth it. You can find out where a car was originally titled, where it came from, if it has had a salvage title, usually where its been, and if it has had reported damage.

There are instances where some info slips through the cracks, like damage that was repaired and not reported.

Overall, it doesn't make sense to pinch pennies on this 40 bucks. Do it.

Never heard of the autocheck company suggested by the previous poster.

I used it for my Audi purchase. I think it's a better option. Especially how frequently 60 Minutes or whomever does shows on Carfax being full of shit

Like you said, don't pinch pennies. Maybe get both and compare.

Autocheck is by Experian and is supposed to be better. I used both Autocheck and Carfax on my last car purchase. When looking at certain vehicles, I found info on the Carfax report that wasn't on the Autocheck, and vice versa.

Neither is foolproof.

You can get discounted Carfax if you are member with any of the affiliated group. In past I have got unlimited carfax for $27 (including tax) through AAA. I also think some of the chain stores (Costco/Sam's) have some sort of deal/discount.

& Oh yes do get the unlimited Carfax, but use Carfax report as more of an elimination process than a selection process. Seal a deal only after through in person inspection of the vehicle.

^ what he said. I wouldn't sweat the 40 bucks when you're making a $25k+ investment. Plus with the unlimited, if this deal falls through you can still use it to run other VINs. <!-- / message --><!-- edit note -->

Autocheck and Carfax don't catch everything.....definitely still inspect the car, if it was never reported, it never existed on these reports.

Porsche requires Experian Autocheck in its certified used program. Acura requires a Carfax. Either one can miss things but it's better than not checking at all.

In regards to knowing whether a title is clean or not, just look at it. If it has a salvage title or true mileage unknown it will be labeled on the title itself.

Because of cost or another reason?

We also used Autocheck when I worked for an independent.

Progressive Insurance does NOT report to carfax... So don't put a lot of faith into them. Best thing to do would be to take the car to a body shop and have them look at it.

Good job making this public. Get ready for an Influx of PM's from freeloaders who will want you to run carfax's for them.
