Busted shaft? Car won't move reverse nor drive

I need your help all. My sister in law is in a rough patch and her car broke down. When driving the rpms sorta went nuts so pulled over. The car wouldn't move in reverse nor in any forward gears. Added 3 quarts of ATF bit that didnt work. Really nice man called his transmission buddy. Buddy told us to push car when in Park. It rolled. Then he said to cut the wheel. Grinding noise when turned right. Apparently shaft came loose. How much are we talking and how hard to fix? Appreciate the help

Look at the CV joints and see if the boots is entirely torn apart. That's the usual tell-tail sign a CV joint broke. It is not common to break a half shaft in the middle shaft part.

Did it need 3 qrts of tranny fluid to get to the fill line or did she just dump in more tranny fluid to see if it fixed the problem? Although this won't fix the original problem just make sure she didn't overfill the tranny as well or this could ruin the tranny as well.

Yeah the ATF was empty. 3 put it a little under where it needed to be. She couldn't tell me what the repair was but it cost $150 or $300 to do both sides. I asked her if it was the CV joints but she had no idea. She's doing both.
