Brake Fade

Last friday i totalled my 94 accord coupe - hit a utility pole at about 30 mph. Of course the bags deployed and the car is beyond repair. When I hit the brakes (moderately hard from about 50 mph) the pedal went all the way in till it hit the stopper and the car slowed down way too slowly. The brakes weren't even strong enough to lock up the wheels and thus there was no ABS intervention. Usually i can get the ABS to intervene when the pedal is depressed about three quarters of the way.

I had just exited a residential neighborhood with a bunch of stop signs and was fairly hard on the brakes. When I hit the last stop sign there was some mushyness in the pedal, but it didn't worry me. I took a right turn at that stop sign and drove for a good 1-1.5 miles before i hit the brakes and raped the pole.

I'm thinking that brake fade was the reason as to why the brakes failed. But I though that brake fade was something only experienced on the track etc. Any suggestions as to what might have happened. BTW, the brake pads were your average aftermaket pads "manufactured to OEM specification..." that i bought from autozone for about $28. Thanks for any help and suggestions.
