bmw tried to close the gap

well at least they are going in the right direction. The 325 gets more standard equipment, like fog lights, climate control, cruise control, heated mirrors, the 330 gets the sports package, power seats and all the above as well as the harmon kardon system as standard. AS well as , yes a new steering mechanism that makes it more like what it used to be. All out in september. Hmmm, the heat is on.

and what's the price increase?

and if someone like a girl that wanted a 330ci for the logo rather than the car didn't want the sports package, she'd have to take it 'cuz it's standard?

The airhead would get a 325 without the sports package, "still a beemer."

I wouldn't get either of those cars....the good thing is for those that do want one is that they lease fairly well- a descently loaded 330Ci ($42k) can be had for under $600/month for 36 months, $0 down (tags and tags up), 12k year...more specific, like $580 (a friend priced one out recently).

The interesting thing is though- a 330Ci can be had for the approx the above amount....a 2001 M3 at MSRP for the same term is a $1000/month (no programs) , yes $400 more per month- how much worse could the residual be than the 330 (its lower, but not that much)- its amazing how an interest rate can effect a payment so drastically- its a good thing I didn't wait for the M3.

lol...very true, I guess daddy's screwed.

And a lot of people do buy the 3 series, excluding the M3, just because it's a BMW. I couldn't justify the extra money over the CL for a 330, it's just not worth it IMO. I do like it's styling more and its size, but 10K+ just for that, maybe if I had the money to waste, but then I wouldn't settle for the 330.

Your not paying 10k for just styling and the name. Have you ever been or driving a new BMW? I use to think the same as you... unsophisticated one. then my friend got one. 2001 325Ci, drives like a dream... your Cl-S may beat it 0-60 but i'd bet my dads E55 AMG that it will out do the Cl on twisties... Bmw isnt just a name.. they handle like a dream, the suspension is godly, and besides its BMW... its perfect. or at least you would know if you;ve ever been in one.. I'm sure those who hve driving BMW's and pushed them know what I'm talking about.

how did e55's get into the topic?

and $10k more, it's not all for a name, you get more, but the more you do get isn't worth $10k, a large part of that 10k is for the name.

and it's perfect?!

i guess every car manufacturer is as unsophisticated as we are, 'cuz why don't they just quit and make bmws...after all, it's perfect.

Umm, I beg to differ...the 325Ci is not a dream IMO, the 330 is nice though (added power makes the difference)- has to be equipped with the Sport package, is it worth 10k more than a CL?- if its worth it to the person buying it, then it is- just for reference I had a 95 M3 and a 00 Mcoupe, and they aren't perfect by any means.

You compared the CL to a 325Ci (same basic price point)....in a 0-60 contest. Then you compared a $70k performance MB to a $30k Acura in a handling contest.. .

yeah, and some people value a name more than anything the car tangibly has to offer.

but i think that "its bmw...it's perfect" has got to be one of the most ignorant (ignant for us unsophisticated thinkers) comments i've heard in a long time on this site.

These changes occured months ago. The 330 does not get the sports package. It only gets the sports suspention, not wheels/tires, seats, steering wheel; just like the coupe, the Sports pack does not add an upgraded suspention. What BMW should offer in the SP is a higher differential, just like 540 sport cars get.

I owned a 97 540iA and "pushed" it ... you are correct ... it was a sweet car. But perfect ... I don't think so. I had so many problems (electrical, A/C, rattles, etc) that the dealer refunded my purchase price IN FULL to avoid getting the car back under the California lemon laws. Perhaps you should be a bit more sublime when making an assine statement like "they're perfect."

The 330Ci sport package doesn't have the supension like you said, but does have wider 17' inch wheels with stickier performance tires and 10 way power sport seats- its a nice option....its good for those not interested in aftermarket wheels, or leased their car and don't want to put extra $ into it (basically a non-residualized item)- but appreciate a little added performance, with a nicer looking wheel to boot- but its also good for those who just want it .

Going over to my friend's work place to see his new BMW 3 series. Can't wait 'til he sees my type S, takes a ride in it, and then finds out what I paid, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Ahhhh...so that's why MB is putting out that C230 hatchback and why BMW is bringing out the 1 series:
Honda Civic + MB nameplate = $28K??? Good luck...

They should sell BMW stickers to put on the trunk, grille, and wheels for those people...

All of the "new" standard features for the 325 are already standard except the fog lights. My girlfriend just bought a 325i about 3 weeks ago. It is a very nice car. Although it does not have near the performance numbers of the CLS, it is still a fairly quick car. The one advantage that a 325 does have over the CLS is that you can down-shift into 1st when going below 32 mph when in the SS mode, and the car does not control the 1 - 2 shift.
