BMW owner tapes black car to white
When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage (!). Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off. Thanks for the tip Frank.

Wow... so it's a 3M M3. I wonder how much it costs to "foil" your car, versus painting it.

Nice... like that black roof and valence!
oh and I thought the M3 roof was CF? or is it CF painted black?

The owner's attitude probably sucks.

Aside from the black roof contrast, i think it looks pretty good. If it's relatively inexpensive, easy to put on and take off, I'd be all over it. Maybe today i'm feeling Alpine white, but 6 months from now I want to go Montego Blue. I don't know, does the option of being able to change color without buying a new car or getting a paint job only appealing to me?

I meant CF painted to look gloss black, no weave pattern.... OR does it actually look like CF, as in, it has the CF weave pattern, etc.
nevermind.

^^ At least.
The big dawgs, that only wrap cars for a business would charge about 2500 to 3000 for a job like that. Not to mention having your car for a couple of days.
This is what I do at work. That particular vinyl has a cross weave pattern (3m) and would be visible on the car....of course the pics dont show that, but i promise it looks nothing like a pristine paint job up close. Not near as glossy, and waxing will do no good.

^^ Not a chance.
Im looking at a Fellers catalog at work right now. 164' of 3M Controltac costs $785.99. You'll use most, if not all pieceing it together to make the car look perfect.
So......................
If you have a hook up at a shop I suppose you could inch by at around $1000. If you personally wanted it done, and went to a shop...we charge $125/hour and were cheap. I would estimate at least 8 solid hours. Not to sound like a know it all, but its what I have been doing for...at least 5 years. I price them daily.
If there is any sort of design, or print (vinyl only comes in white) add at least another $500-$1000.
$785 - Vinyl
$750 (avg) - Design
$1000 - 8 hrs, minimum.
(Plus overlam if theres a print or color other than white - add another $500 - $1000)
Cheaply and roughly, if you do it perfect the first time, which you never do.
$2535.

I have no idea. I just felt like posting it here when I found it in other thread.

My question is, 'How closely to a real clear coat paint can it really look?'
Some enthusiast like myself who seem to wash my car weekly, almost daily , can really tell when they've done a good job, or after a really good clay, polish and wax. This can't possibly have the shine and luster of a clear coat paint, yea?
